This is one eyebrow away from looking like a Dreamworks or even Blue Sky movie.
>>

No but I said that about Inside out, which I ended up enjoying immensely, so I am willing to give this the benefit of the doubt.

Same here. I thought Inside Out would be trash and the only thing I ended up disliking is how little time they spent on worldbuilding.

It looks like a total rip-off of the first Ice Age. Feeling little hype at the moment.
>>

They're releasing this very under-the-radar compared to the usual Disney/Pixar fanfare. I have a feeling that the production process fell well behind but the production process had already gone beyond the point of no return so they just rushed it out to scrape back some tickets.

I really hope I'm wrong since Sohn is a great animator and artist. I'd love to see some new blood in Pixar's directing camp and if anyone deserves this prestige it's Sohn.

C'mon, man. Spirited Away wasn't even a FINISHED movie. Miyazaki was 18 months behind schedule and changed the entire third act to suit the needs of production.

My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away are both great. I admit it, the weeaboos surrounding them are beyond insufferable (and if they claim to be animation fans, should check out movies like The Humpbacked Horse and The King and The Mocking Bird), but they're both fun movies.

yeah, that's pretty much the vibe I got from hearing the voice of a generation Lorde alongside those scenes in the first trailer.

really made it seem like they were trying really fucking hard to make it look artsy phartsy and just threw the 'self discovery extremely moving film' cliche out there so hard many people were literally able to tell what the movie was going to be about at first glance.
>>
>>77653152
>yeah, that's pretty much the vibe I got from hearing the voice of a generation Lorde alongside those scenes in the first trailer.
The song in the first trailer was Of Monsters & Men, not Lorde. I agree on the 'self discovery extremely moving film' cliche thing though, trailers can be misleading but that looks like the direction it's heading in.

Miyazaki hasn't completed a movie on time since Princess Mononoke.

Watch Spirited Away again. The villain of the film actually changes from No Face to Yubaba. No Face was supposed to be the central antagonist of the movie, but when production got too far behind, Miyazaki had to rewrite the story to focus on Yubaba's intimidation as the greatest threat to stealing away Chihiro's shot at returning home (as opposed to appeasing No Face's selfishness).
>>
>>77653104
For better or for worse, I think that's kind of the point. It's the goofiest looking dinosaur of the lot, which is mean to gain sympathy, I imagine, when he overcomes whatever troubles he faces (I'm guessing the loss of his father, based on the longform trailer) and learns how to survive.
>>

I wasn't until I heard an NPR interview with the director. I'll give it a shot now. Doesn't look worse than a Bug's Life and definitely doesn't look as bad as cars/Cars 2, and even that wasn't HORRIBLE. Just a huge letdown following stuff like Wall-E, UP, and Incredibles.

>it's just some bastard project they shat out.

I work with some Disney tie-in publishers, and trust me, in 2000 Disney was completely obsessed with this movie—they wanted a slice of the Jurassic Park and Land Before Time market very, very badly, and were convinced this would outdo them both quite handily.

Unfortunately, it played like an uninspired combination of the two, with constant hamfisted attempts to be moralistic and cute—sort of "Disney" as stereotyped by people who don't usually watch Disney films.

Disney could have had a very good dinosaur adventure movie, but poured in so much formula that no one was interested.

>>
>>77659443
What else would the plot be? Every dino movie has to shed or distract from the audience's baggage of only knowing dinosaurs as things that all died a long time ago. It gets them thinking about mortality and shit, and a person in that mindset is not ready to be a good capitalist consumer. Gotta address it directly by saying "don't worry, these ones all made it out ok!" so the kids will buy all their playsets and toys.

Trying not to sound too weebish but after seeing You Are Umasou I just can't give any shits for any other cute dinosaur movies. Pixar should just adapt that since I doubt they can do better.

Original Land Before Time being the exception. It always melts my icy heart.
>>
>>77660106
Just in time for the December toy boom. Pixar doesn't care how well the movie does, they want another merchandising cash cow like Cars.
>>
>>77660940
So with cars and dinosaurs out of the way, what's the next type of generic toy that kids already buy that they can put a Pixar face on?
>>
>>77654915
Sure they would. Carnivorous birds do.
Not having shit on the head isn't a thing, I don't know why people think it is because vultures exist. Just about every single other carnivorous bird/mammal has feathers on the head.

It'd be like me saying "Well whales don't have a coat of fur, so all water dwelling mammals must be bald."
>>
>>77659533

>>
>>77661207
Superheroes aren't generic, though. What I mean is kids will buy toy cars and dinosaurs even if there's no name attached because kids just like that sort of thing. Superhero toys are more about selling characters (and to a lesser extent, gimmicks).
>>
>>77661056
did enjoy it more than Brave?

>>
>>77661261
It's much much better than Brave. The two have very familiar stories but The Good Dinosaur sticks in the mind after the credits much more than Brave did.

You'd think Brave would be memorable given the gorgeous environments they go out of their way to make yet they never really made great use of it. In the Good Dinosaur, the movie takes it's time and allows the viewer to really drink in the visuals. As a result the plot is quite minimalist, but it works as a benefit. You can really feel the "Power" of the earth, if that makes sense.

These days I've stopped thinking of Pixar as a monolith and started looking more closely at directors.

For example, this is Peter Sohn's first feature,so not much to judge him on except his past short film which was okay. But of upcoming films, I'm willing to get a little hype over Finding Dory because Andrew Stanton has proven himself in the past. I'm also absolutely not looking forward to Toy Story 4 because John Lassetter has become the bane of his own organization and I no longer trust him.

Ratatouille

>Toy Story 3, Up
>Worse than Toy Story 2 and Inside Out
NOPE
>>
>>77661580
I agree with you on Ratatouille.

I never really understood what everyone saw in that movie.
>>
>>77661602
What stops Toy Story 3 and Up being truly great is that they reach for the heartstrings in a very opaque way, and you notice this the more times you view it.

Inside Out is emotionally powerful but in a very earnest way. Toy Story 2 I guess you could say was a bit overboard but I personally didn't mind it.

Also keep in mind that after the first two Toy Story movies, the plot to Toy Story 3 felt very familiar which is also why I placed it below those two.
>>
>>77654915

I wouldn't think wolves would have fur in their heads, that's a parasite city given they'll have it "dunged" into some dead animals all the time.
>>
>>77661627
the theme was too heavy and mature for general audiences, but i think it was fantastic
>>
>>77660876
Age of Reptiles:Tribal Warfare. It is.
>>
>>77661580
Perfect except that Cars was meh.

And Ratatouille is underrated imo. Nobody talks about it. I'd say it'd be good.

But still, solid chart.
>>
>>77662360
why is this post cute
>>
>>77662435
It's a /co/ thing. /co/ almost always rates Ratatouille head and shoulders above anything else Pixar has made. Partly because it's good and partly because it's underrated by the general populous so it's relatively untouched by filthy casual fingerprints.
>>
>>77662435
Ratatouille flunks because it doesn't follow on its core message "Anyone can cook." Except the main human character who never learns anything about cooking and who just acts as the hands of the self centered asshole rat.
>>
>>77662531
I guess so. I've personally never seen that anywhere, but I can see where you're coming from.
>>77662570
I thought that the core message was to play to your strengths, detractors be damned. You don't have to follow anyone's expectations. "Anyone can cook" is more a version of "Anyone can _________", because the protagonist wants to be a cook.
For example, Linguini shouldn't have to live up to his father's legacy if he's not a good cook, and Remy shouldn't have anyone holding him back from continuing that legacy using his talents.

I haven't seen every Pixar movie, so tell me if this statement is accurate:

The more merchandise a Pixar movie has, the less likely it's going to be good.
>>
>>77650226
>Egoraptor
>>
>>77662570
>self centered asshole rat

Truth. Remy wasn't a likable character at all.
>>
>>77662435
I say ratatouille is overrated because I didn't like Remy, I thought he was pretty self centered.

It's ironic though because I loved The Walk even though Philippe Petit was portrayed in the exact same way (if not worse) and, like Remy, had a big dream he wanted to achieve.

I think it's understandable to be that arrogant when the goal you want to achieve is so impossibly huge. Maybe I was wrong about Remy.
>>
>>77659401
I saw the movie and loved it. I think I watched it on DVD like 10 times, which was a lot for me.
>>
>>77662630
>I thought that the core message was to play to your strengths, detractors be damned.
I really don't get why this is hard to figure out since they spell it out for you. The meaning behind "Anyone can cook" wasn't anyone can do anything, but that the POTENTIAL for greatness can come from anywhere, no matter how humble or unlikely.

Like if instead of a rat Remy were just poor as shit, it'd still hold true.
>>
>>77659078
These are at every garage sale ever.
>>
>>77662723
Me too. I fucking loved it as a child, hell I'd probably watch it again as an adult now and get a boner for fucknormous dinoass
>>
>>77659206
It did actually make money, but the Walking with Dinosaurs miniseries pretty much overshadowed it critically by coming out a few months before hand so by the time Dinosaur's video release came around, people had forgotten it.
>>
>>77662710
>>77662713

To be fair most (but not all) Pixar protagonists tend to be self-centered, entitled assholes before the movie starts, or at least selfish to some degree. A few good examples are:
>retired superhero trying to relive the glory days when doing so is dangerous and irresponsible for his family
>coward who tricks a group of literal clowns into doing his dirty work
>favorite toy insanely jealous of a newcomer
>racer who holds no qualms about throwing others under the bus for the sake of ambition
>old guy who obsesses over his dead wife and their possessions
>and yes, a rat who uses an ordinary guy as a pawn to achieve his dream
The course of the movie usually consists of these characters being taken down a peg or proven wrong and growing from the experience, which the audience can then take to heart. Which is a pretty great thing when your primary viewers are kids.

>>77662754
Regardless, "anyone can cook" is meant to serve as a metaphor for a bigger idea, which >>77662570 ignored.

>>77661199

I'm still waiting for 4chan to notice this movie has a dirty, semi-naked, feral little boy in it. The fanart will be the stuff of legend.

Dyke Feathers are actually a really common way for people to put feathers on dinosaurs but still try to be cool for liking dinosaurs because 'big monstrous birds' aren't cool enough for the plebs.

No, the character design is so gooby that I hate it

Being Pixar, though, there's a good chance it'll actually be awesome

I'll check out a few reviews first

So which character will almost die in a sad scene where it's raining. The kid or the good dinosaur.

They are going to have that scene where everyone almost cries.

Inside Out was a Pixar film literally about feels. Why you wouldn't expect it to kick you right in the sweet spots is beyond me.

>Overrated: Ratatouille
What does that even mean. Also Cars 1 is ok if you ignore all the toy shilling. It's got a good message and shit.
>>
>>77661627
The entire "Why do I need to pretend?" "But you don't, Remy. You never did." scene is perhaps one of the best scenes in any Pixar film to date. It's just so fucking great.

Ratatouille is such a sweet, warm and comfy film.
>>
>>77664572
The "literally about feels" is an important part. I can understand why you would have been fooled by a gimmick like Cars though if you had an above average interest in automobiles.
>>
>>77664791
I get that, but the "literally about feels" subject matter doesn't automatically guarantee my enjoyment of it, nor does it guarantee the movie will be good.
>>
>>77664934
Nah, no guarantees. But it is good. And I thought the concept was tired and overused before watching, but they still did it very well.

Reminder that the Incredibles is the greatest cape movie ever made.

Superman, The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2 are all great but they still don't match this.
>>
>>77661056
>lot of emotional power to it.
So you're saying people will defend this movie because "muh feelz"?
>>
>>77661580
The first Cars movie wasn't even that bad. It's just that the shitty Cars 2 clouds everyone's judgement.

Seriously just try to forget Cars 2 exists, then rewatch the original Cars. It's a solid 'meh,' at the very least.
>>
>>77665464
No it's not that exactly. There are no scenes akin to Andy leaving in Toy Story 3 or Ellie dying in Up if that is what's meant by "muh feelz" in this context. The emotional power is lent mostly through the visually arresting scenery and how it ties in with the character development. It isn't just the "sad" scenes that stand out. If anything the most memorable scenes are the moments of triumph and joy as well as the fear that the power of nature induces.
>>

probably somewhere between a crocodile penis and an ostrich penis. plenty of room for unpreservable variation, though. having a really long dick could be part of the answer to how stegosaurs fucked.
