I find these interesting. These were clearly in the very early stages, and it seems like rather than having Sadness as a central point of conflict, Riley's rejecting her emotions and feelings altogether due to social pressure. I also like how Fear is the straight man here, he balances Joy out well.

Joy as an emotion hasn't matured yet.
They kept that in the final script, but it was less about Joy wishing for Riley to remain a child by doing childish things (and how she believed it's not possible to be happy whilst doing anything else) and more about Joy understanding that happiness can come from the other emotions guiding Riley through her tough times.
I like what's in the new movie because it shows that kids grow more emotionally complex. Each emotion becomes more multifaceted and there is crossover between them such as happy-sad (melancholy) and happy-mad (the joy of achieving victory) the emotions go through changes as a result of them (other than Sadness) finally understanding that they all need each other and should work together. This is juxtaposed by the adults' emotions who talk to each other and form plans-of-action and deliberate.

I think I would have liked to see Joy having to learn that her totalitarian control of Riley was actually detrimental to Riley's life in the way that the deleted scene with the dress set it up. Just Riley acting like a much younger kid and Joy having to realize that there's other kinds of happiness than just childlike play. I guess there isn't much of a moral to that, though.

Joy tried to fuck over Sadness a couple of times. There was the situation surrounding the sad core memory and the climax where Joy jumped in the recall tube and told Sadness she had to be left behind for Riley's sake.
Doesn't sound all that different to what you described Fear doing, except the themes were altered:
Joy was unwittingly holding back Riley's development, vis a vis her growing up.
Fear was actively trying to force Riley's growth because Joy wanted to hold back Riley's growing up, because to her maturity looked really fucking boring.

It's true, yes, but in the script Fear took on Sadness's role of helping her grow through difficult times. Joy was the emotion trying to hold Riley back from change because she saw how Riley was growing up and thought it looked boring.
The whole "Heck no we won't grow" shit is so unflinchingly unsubtly political that the film would have been way too hard for everyone to enjoy.
I'm real glad Docter and Pixar made the film as universal as they did.

Yeah, storyboards are supposed to be fast and rough, but the artists who did the boards aren't very good at drawing and dont seem to know much about squash/stretch. At least the end result turned out great.
