Why are animated comedy shows for adults so downer right now? Rick and Morty and Bojack Horseman have a bunch of bad shit happen to the main characters, and not all for comedy sake. I'm not against comedy shows trying to reach emotions every now and then but this seems to be a bit much.

Animated shows for adults have been downers long before either of those came along.

Because in America cartoons and animation are seen as something for children
So the creators of "adult" cartoons interject sadness to prove its adult

And it's meant for this board, not /tv/, so OP should have it here.

i don't think they're overdoing it. they're going right up to the limit and stopping there.

Because it's a damned season ending and knowing Cartoon Network, a possible series ending and they're sad but they want it to have that bit of hook, that bit of 'please watch us, need us to make another season'.

It's common throughout these broken stories to leave something unsettled at the end of a season, and certainly not limited to Adult cartoons, look at almost any story-arc driven series and see how many have been killed off with tragic lack of resolution.

No, it was known there would be a 3rd season way beforehand. In fact the only reason the finale was a cliffhanger is because they couldn't break the story for the 2nd part of it in time, then wrote the purge one in like an hour to make up for it.

Because cartoons are inherently seen as something for children, so adult cartoons have something to prove and a major chip on their shoulder.

In order to set themselves apart from children's cartoons and prove to that they are a legitimate form of entertainment, DAD, they deserve to be taken seriously, DAD! they feel the need to either go for ultraviolent grossout "humor" (Superjail), crass and sexual romps (Archer) or meaningful and serious dramatic storytelling feels (Bojack).

Grossout shows don't hold an audience for very long because they are a novelty, so they are falling out of style. Archer-esq romps are still around, but feelsy cartoons are becoming more popular since thats a bit newer of genre so there is more room to breakout and get noticed there.

Though, it may be more than that. Feelsy cartoons are becoming more popular regardless of age group. Stephen Universe pushes a lot of the same buttons, but its for kids.
