Set-up for Marcy's decision to give up her powers felt a bit sloppy, but going into her backstory with the human colonies was good. Did a good job setting up the vampires coming back and the story in general.

Felt like filler. The Empress and the other guy added nothing. The confrontation with Marcy and Ice King explained what easily could have been inferred from the first two episodes of Stakes and even the original Ice King/Marcy episode.

Whole post is good, but this is the most important sentence. I feel really sad about how casually they get killed. But then again, it would be difficult to do it otherwise while also putting in humour, teasing and adventure in under 11 minutes.

That would have great potential but with these writers I feel it would never work. They seem to think that more cliche stories like the hero going on a self-quest to improve themselves are too boring so they would mix it up in some way that wouldn't end up being satisfying, like he realizes that he can only do heroic feats because of the strength of his friends empowering him or some dumb shit.

Like, while the comet "arc" was anticlimatic as a whole, I enjoyed what it tried to do or the idea around it, having Finn deal with some of his issues (granted, most issues he didn't really seem to have before it all started) and finishing with Finn making a deceleration of living his life to the fullest. I think literally the only character who has never said something along the lines of "slam a cow" or "you dink" is The Lich and I'm probably wrong about that too.
It's the entire endless cycle of Adventure Time where it tries to get progressively more serious in the situations the characters face but everyone still acts like their just doing wacky fights where at worst you're going to get punched in the face. The conversation between an actual elder god and Finn was something two roommates who were high as shit would say to each other.
Even in this mini series we have this weird 50/50 splits between "funny" and "serious" but it's happening at the same time. When Marceline has an actual fight to the death with vampires their still talking like at best they're going to get slapped and not fucking staked through the heart or when the get serious she calls them a dink.

I loved Marceline back when she was a cool character during the former seasons, now she is a bit too serious and boring (also, I don't see her fighting for innocent animals at all).
Stakes starts off good, reaches a great middle part with good jokes and sense of adventure and goes quite bad with a boring last episode with the most trite hero cliché. Nowhere near as bad as The Comet, but bad nonetheless.

I think it says something where the second to last scene is a collection of the wacky and funny residents of Ooo banding together to assault the giant super serious vampire feelings storm only for them to be completely irrelevant when the super serious (not) vampire with emotional problems has to save everyone.
It was her melodramatic saga that achieved very little for her and goes to show that ultimately everyone on Ooo who isn't riddled with emotional baggage are side characters who are irrelevant and powerless.
