Yes, the character is in the public domain but the name "Blue Beetle" belongs to DC.

>>
>>77489715
Doc is Doc Strange. He's basically their ripoff of Doc Savage, except with a superpower (Doc Strange takes a serum called Alosun).

http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Doc_Strange

Alan Moore later used the character and named him Tom Strange, as an alternate Earth counterpart to Tom Strong.
>>

You answered several questions but only raised many, many more.

It's Golden Age comic science, none of it makes sense.

Shit, just look at Jay Garrick's origin (albeit that one actually WAS based on a scientific experiment that was published at the time, where exposing mice to heavy water reportedly increased their metabolic rates).

Earth 2 was fantastic at first because it was cool to see a new take on those legacies grow organically from the ground up.

>>
>Lisellotte von Schellendorf was raised by the Germans to be Valkyrie, the most alluring and evil woman of all, and to be the most skilled and deadly of all pilots. Valkyrie and her girl squadron, the Airmaidens, were trained to be perfect Nazis by Herr Oberst, a Nazi colonel. After training, Valkyrie blasted her way through the Allied pilots until she ran into Airboy. When she captured Airboy, three members of her squadron hid him in an old hangar but were found out by Oberst. He ordered them to be whipped and Airboy killed. Although she was all right with seeing the young boy sent to his death, the prospect of seeing her subordinates whipped appalled Valkyrie. She tried to persuade Oberst to show mercy, but the Nazi commander didn't budge. Suddenly realizing that all Nazis were cruel and evil, Valkyrie killed Oberst and then used Airboy's own plane, Birdie, to rescue him and her three comrades.

>From that point on, she joined the Allies and fought on their side for the remainder of the war. She continued to aid Airboy every once in a while. Their feelings for each other grew and, as Airboy got older, their relationship got a lot more physical. If they'd had more than seven adventures together, their romance could have been positively epic.

That was one of the great things about Johns's work in JSA, it was obvious he did his homework on the history of the team and their legacies and touched on a lot of aspects of that history in the run.

I recommend it to anyone who's trying to get into the DC Universe at large, because it really illustrates just how interconnected the post-Crisis universe was and how the superhero communities branched out and interacted with each other.

Man, NOBODY's age in that comic made any sense. Well Wildcat, Jay and Alan all had magic bullshit reasons for still being young, Carter had just been resurrected, and Ma Hunkle is like in her 70s, that all sounds about right
>>
>>
>>77491722

Alan has Starheart magic bullshit

Jay has Speedforce

Carter was resurrected via Thanagarian magic-science and has the reincarnation thing on top of it

Ted Grant has a magical curse that backfired and literally gave him a cat's nine lives

And as for the rest of them, the JSA was stuck in Limbo fighting off Ragnarock (yes the literal twilight of the gods) for a long time, which removed them from the timestream for a bit. Then most of them were involved with Zero Hour on top of it which further fucked around with the flow of time for many of the members, so all of them got affected in different ways.

Like Ted Knight was physically in his 50's despite being just as old as the rest of them (something he has a fair bit of guilt about in Robinson's Starman series)

Contrast that with Wesley Dodds, who aged normally and was well into his 80s when he appeared in the same series.

Most of them were old when they got out of Limbo, Alan got deaged later and they started writing Jay and Ted younger because of speedforce/magic bullshit

then they all died during Zero Hour so it didn't matter anyway fuck Zero Hour

They have some other interesting other Golden Agers. Blonde Phantom, the Black Marvel, the original Vision, the Blazing Skull, the Destroyer, the Liberty Legion (Thin Man, Blue Diamond, Jack Frost, Red Raven), Miss America and the Whizzer (who served on both the Liberty Legion and later The Invaders).
Then there were those guys on The Twelve (which sadly never got finished).

Although specifically, a Yankee, from the Northeast.

This one is evocative of a colonial era Yankee, circa the Revolutionary War, making him especially patriotic or something.

I believe Astro City had a guy who was a tribute to this kind of character that was surprisingly badass, a bit of a legend, who always showed up and disappeared suddenly, whenever his country most needed him. Like a ghost or tutelary spirit of AMERICA.

I might make one today. I want to make categories based on publishing house (Timely/Marvel, National Periodicals/DC, Hillman, ACG)

And then I want to add a category for books made after the Golden Age set or refrenceing events during the Golden Age. Like the Elsewords book by James Robinson, JSA: The Golden Age, Dynamite Entertainment's Project: Superpowers and Alan Moore's Tom Strong and Terra Obscura.
>>
>>77522090
If your going to put on modern comics about the Golden Age add Robinson's run on Starman (one of the biggest love letters to the golden age of comics) and the Vertigo series Sandman Mystery Theater.

That series had a lot of Film Noir references.

>Hourman 1,000,000 ( Returned Home)
>Hourman 1 (dead)

Huh? Hourman 1M traveled to Zero Hour time and took Hourman 1's place, preventing Hourman 1's death.
>>
>>77551831
Didn't know that, never read Zero hour.
>>
>>77551859
Hourman 1 was killed in Zero Hour. There was another comic years later, I almost want to say it was in a JSA arc or something, where Hourman 1M goes back in time to the events of Zero Hour and takes Hourman 1's place while sending Hourman 1 to the present day.
>>
>>77551924

It was part of Johns' JSA series, yes.

It's really tragic and almost kind off funny as all the Hourmen (Rex Tyler, Rick, his son, and Hourman 1Million) wind up arguing for who gets to sacrifice themself against Extant.

That's true, but at first the Freedom Fighters were part of the All-Star Squadron. Then they (and various other Quality Comics heroes) went to Earth-X.

Honestly Roy Thomas really should've just kept Plastic Man and the Blackhawks on Earth-2 to count their Golden Age stuff, while introducing Earth-X's counterparts to Plastic Man and the Blackhawks (to fit in with the implication that Plastic Man and Blackhawks were gone in the first Earth-X story)

I'd be frustrated with lack of modern Golden-Age style Alan Scott, had Kingdom Come not already been the best end for the character.

Sitting above the Earth in a Green Lantern energy construct orbital castle as a veritable god of justice seemed very up Scott's alley, assuming his earthly attachments perished or never were.

Rose and the Thorn is technically a Flash villain. Her only appearance with Green Lantern is in a Roy Thomas retcon.

Except both Mr. Satan and Batman can trace that origin back to Zorro, The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Shadow. Probably why DC didn't sue.

Because as someone once said "Dr. Mid-Nite is more like a superhero first responder" and that's pretty cool.

I don't get Mr. Terrific or Starman. Not the legacies who came after them, those guys are cool as fuck, I just don't understand the reason why somebody would create such characters

I mean, everybody's got their thing. Green Lantern is a magic wizard who can conjure green flame constructs to fight zombies. Alright, cool. Wildcat is a boxer who just got tired of everybody's bullshit and started dressing up like a cat. Sure, whatever. But Mr. T and Starman stick out in the fact that they lack a certain depth that the other JSA members have

I dunno, they just seem redundant to have on the team. I don't understand what they bring to the table, a an in-universe and storytelling standpoint

Starman is a classic science adventurer hero. His gimmick was just "star" power instead of atomic power or electricity or whatever.

Mr. Terrific is a community focused hero which is a kind of dated very Great Depression idea. No powers or anything, just an idealistic guy with a mask smacking up the bullies and making sure the local kids grow up right. If he was around now /co/ would just call him SJW.
