Well, it is a revenge story, nobody ever just shoots the guy in those. The gay bashing just makes it less out of left field - can't kill him without putting him his place, and all that garbage.
I'm just surprised this is being played to the hilt. This is really violent, and really brightly colored, and ripped from the headlines - and that's pretty much it.
