Johns really emphasized her heroicness next to Arthur. It was him that transformed the Aquaman book into Aquaman and Mera. Parker was just building on it. Remember before this PAD had Mera kek Arthur and the next volume basically reduced it into a loveless marriage.
But in Johns version the central thing is their relationship so much so that the end of his run focused on them.
