I've heard that the writers actually thought they might end the series a couple episodes earlier, with "The Old Man and the Lisa." So they would've finished the series by killing off Homer when Lisa gives him a heart attack.

It was a great cutting off point. House's addiction finally catches up with him and after how many seasons of build up, Chase and Cameron finally get married.
At first I wondered if it actually HAD ended.
And then it came back and only went downhill from there. I like to imagine the seasons after that never happened.
