Yep, Darwin has always been better than Gumball in my eyes. He's more well rounded of a character.

Gumball is simultaneously rude, a jerk, incompetent and lazy but also imaginative, kind-hearted, energetic and optimistic. Overall though, I find him obnoxious, especially his voice.

Darwin on the other hand (especially season one Darwin) is a largely passive, soft-hearted, innocent but not very bright kid. He does his best and wants to be liked and appreciated. However he is also very shy.
