Alex Ross does a lot of covers that just show a bunch of superheroes fighting with no area of focus, where the only apparent message is just "Look at all the superheroes that are in this story."
He said in his art book that "Crisis on Infinite Earths" was a big influence on him.

There are covers lying and then there are covers that just leave you with bitter disappointment because of cover's potential.

Yeah I'm not disappointed at all. I have no interest in seeing dozens of miscellaneous heroes shooting lasers at eachother floating around in empty space. If anything I wish the cover reflected the inside rather than the other way around.
