What's the deal with this movie? Did Cartoon Network give it a one-week qualifying theatrical release? Or will it? Or will it give something like those "Equestria Girls" releases?

GKids is represented in the list again, with two movies. The first allegedly being Studio Ghibli's last movie ever.

if anomalisa is as good as early reviews say it is, it definitely has a shot of beating the disney dynasty. Remember, the academy loves Kaufman and underdog stories. Remember when the box office flop Hurt Locker beat Avatar?

The next movie from Mamoru Hosoda, who directed the "Digimon" movies as well as "Summer Wars" and "Wolf Children". Unfortunately I haven't found any information on its US distribution. I have no idea what company is distributing it, or if it's giving the film a qualifying release or something more widespread. Also, I could only find a Japanese language website and trailer.

The odd thing about the list is how short it is. These are the movies that I know got or will get US releases, but did not get submitted to the list.

Wide Releases:

Strange Magic
Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos
Hell and Back

Disney: (nominal release)
Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Neverbeast

Gkids:
Extraordinary Tales

Funimation:
Dragonball Z: Resurrection F
Ghost in the Shell: the New Movie

Eleven Arts:
The Last: Naruto, the Movie
Boruto: Naruto the Movie
The Anthem of the Heart

Shout! Factory:
Maya - the Bee Movie
The Seventh Dwarf

Other:
Back to the Jurassic (Dino Time)
All Creatures Big and Small
Love Live!: a School Idol Movie

I don't know which of these movies qualified under the Oscar rules, but I would've liked to have seen them submitted if they did.

I'd like to think that "The Prophet" would win because it's based on a book and Oscar judges love to sniff their own farts and think they're "deep".
But since I know how this goes it will probably be:
"Home", because black MC
"Inside Out", because Pixar
Or "Minions", because their kids liked it.

It's Funi. So it doesn't have a chance t getting nominated because they won't bother to advertise it to voters. It's played at several festivals already, and might have a screener in coming months, but a US release won't happen until Spring 2016. No word on video release though.
>>
Last few years have had 5 nominees appear, and I can likely guess 4 that will get nominated.

>Inside Out
>Good Dinosaur
>Shaun the Sheep
>Peanuts

Maybe Minions? But Lego Movie didn't get nominated because they were too paranoid about being accused of selling out or something and Minions is cashgrab personified.

they have no intention of voting on anything but whatever shit Disney/Pixar slapped on the screen, but they have to look like they at least considered doing otherwise.

Disney/Pixar wins

>Incredibles
>Ratatouille
>Wall-E
>Up
>Toy Story 3

Non-Disney Wins

>Shrek
>Spirited Away
>Wallace and Gromit
>Happy Feet
>Rango

D-disney always w-wins it's rigged. I'd say Brave and Big Hero 6 are the only ones that outright shouldn't have won (Wreck-It Ralph and Lego should have won respectively).
>>
>>77341622

It's written by Charlie Kaufman, so the plebs at the Academy might think it's weird artsy bullshut, and go for something that's more accessible like Inside Out (not that it's worse or makes it plebby, it's just that the Academy tends to like conventional animated films). Although I haven't seen Anomalisa so I might be wring about it being too weird for them.
>>
>>77344637
Disney/Pixar have won 9/14, including 7 of the last 8.

Only 3 times was there a Disney movie that didn't win: Cars lost to Happy Feet in 2008, Lilo & Stitch and Treasure Planet lost to Spirited Away in 2002, and Monsters Inc. lost to Shrek in 2001.

The films that won when Disney wasn't there are Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) and Rango (2011, the last non-Disney winner).

Dreamworks is the only other company to have produced more than 1 Oscar-winning animated features: Shrek in 2001 and Wallace & Gromit in 2005.

Only 2 foreign movies ever won: Wallace & Gromit and Spirited Away.
>>
>>77344698
whoops
>>77344628
>>
>>77344679
Rango and Wallace & Gromit had no Disney competition that year and Happy Feet was up against fucking Cars. The only ones that beat Disney clean were Shrek and Spirited Away, against Monsters Inc. and Lilo & Stitch, respectively.
>>
>>77344703
>The only ones that beat Disney clean were Shrek and Spirited Away, against Monsters Inc. and Lilo & Stitch, respectively.
Both movies being pretty huge international phenomenons when they came out. I mean the Academy would have looked like serious plebs if the didn't pick Spirited Away, which had won several film (period, not animated) awards before then.

Also Spirited Away was dubbed by Wal Disney Pictures under John Lasseter, and released to home video by Buena Vista.
Not much of a loss for Disney.
>>
>>77344703
But again, things like Nemo, Incredibles, Ratatouille, Toy Story, Up and Wall-E were really deserved winners. You can talk about bias to Pixar/Disney, but those films knocked it out of the park.

The only films in recent years that likely deserved the Oscar that didn't win are HTTYD (which was against Toy Story), Lego (The biggest disgrace as it wasn't even nominated), Wreck-It Ralph (which is itself a Disney movie) and HTTYD2.
>>
>>77344748
>things like Nemo, Incredibles, Ratatouille, Toy Story, Up and Wall-E were really deserved winners.
Nobody is saying they're bad movies, but some of their concurrence (The Triplets of Belleville, Persepolis, Kung Fu Panda, The Secret of Kells) was pretty much just as good, just less likely to have been watched by the voters' children.

>HTTYD2
Garbage.
>>
>>77336900
>implying anything but Pixar will win
This category is a fucking racket.
>>
>>77336900
Who care, the jury will not watch them and will just vote for the movie the children they know talk about.
>>
Pixar wins cause the jury literally does not give a fuck and still considers animation inferior and not worthy of attention
>>
The films selected will be,
The Good Dinosaur
Home
Inside Out
Minions
The Peanuts Movie
Shaun the Sheep
When Marnie Was There.

I'm willing to bet its going to be Inside Out, Shaun The Sheep and When Marnie Was There will be shot down because it's "obscure Chinese bullshit." No one will care about Home or The Good Dinosaur or Minions, and Peanuts will come close because of nostalgia.

Like the music awards and a few other things, people have to actually see the movie to vote for this; so yes, technically plebs can go, watch it and vote, but it will more likely be animation related craft people who go.
