What made older AT great was subtlety and self-control -- the sad and serious stuff was for the background only.

There likely won't be a new AT hype as big as the first one, because it's something that happens like once a decade. After a weak sixth season I believe the series will come back stronger than ever, and stabilize its fanbase. I for one am fucking hyped too.

when the two storyboarders with the most divergent styles (Sugar and Moynihan) came on in season 2, you could see the show start to get more and more schizo. the first ep Sugar did (the first one with Marcy's dad) was already really different from season 1. suddenly teen angst and daddy issues and emo songs. it was still really funny but there were the signs of what was to come.

Ignore the fandom, watch the newer episodes wherever you left off. Adventure Time completely ruined the Ice King/Marceline's story by exposing too much of it, before it functioned as this great mythology, with just enough information to be this rich backdrop...then we got Betty. And they filled in every single blank...and the magic was gone.

Not essential, but Seasons 5 and 6 had some amazing episodes like Puhoy, Time Sandwich, and Jake the Brick. They feel more like fun, contained adventures than a lot of other episodes.
If you're thinking about plot-wise, then you probably would need to watch The Lich, Jake the Dog, Finn the Human, Apple Wedding, Blade of Grass, Billy's Bucket List, and Wake Up/Escape from the Citadel. The story of season six is fairly evenly spread, and there are some genuinely fun episodes in there. You can skip Sad face and Friends Forever.

This is because the staff is literally these two sides at odds with each other. Even when it comes to shipping (like bubbeline), some boarders/writers ship it and others don't, and make things all over the place.
The team for SU have a pretty definite beginning, middle, and end planned out. Adventure Time never did, and now that's become obvious.
