This allows the scene to take the main stage while the song floats around in the back and sets the mood.
This isn't to say that Cash's version is bad, but the reason it works is different from the reason Trent's works. Trent's works because it's simple and subtle whereas Cash's has a more genuine feel to it because of A) his choice of chords (using standard majors and minors and opposed the the deliberately morose chords used by Trent) and B) the worn sound of his voice, seasoned with a genuine feeling of pain from years of hardships which actually make the lyrics fit Cash better than Trent. However, Cash sings the song straight while Trent tries to sound more pathetic by whispering which makes it better for accompanying a scene like Rick's arrest.

B Plot: Rick is hooked up to a device that dives into his brain and memories to extract information and reprogram him. After Rick drives a long series of seasoned interrogators to suicide, Tammy dives in, leveraging what she has learned about him and his past from Birdperson. Memories are interposed with relevant present day interactions by Beth and Morty in the A Plot.
C Plot: Due to being known as the man who turned in Rick (not to mention being a generally spineless worm who has never had an original thought in his life), Jerry gets put in a place of power within the galactic government on earth. This puts him at odds with his family, so he'll end up trying to make things right in the end. He will probably fuck it all up wonderfully such that no alien will even touch earth again, setting the stage to a return to the status quo.
D Plot: Summer goes full Red Dawn after her high school gets turned into a Disney-eque hospitality services training ground by the Galactic Government to cater to the hordes of alien tourists

Pretty much this.
Had a similar discussion about Big Iron, comparing the original used in New Vegas to the very tonally different Cash cover.
His version would just overpower and distract rather than support any story it was set to accompany.
The chords are simplified and the vocals are clear and powerful, so it becomes this completely engaging experience of a man sitting you down and telling you a story. And for that reason, these songs just can't really work as an accompaniment for a different man trying to tell you a different story. It'd just become two people talking into either ear at once, to where you can't quite hear either of them.
With the more theatrical vocals and complex chords, the NIN version is engaging on a more subtle musical level, where you can certainly enjoy the words but they're only one part of the whole. And the fact that they can be either enjoyed or just as easily overlooked makes them a great accompaniment to someone else's story that the lyrics relate to, but aren't directly telling. The same way this sort of music is great at letting people drift through their own emotions and experiences.
It's music that pulls you along through the singer's story vs music that invites you to experience whatever story you happen to hear.
Both are great artistic experiences, both are incredibly different.

Rick is king, but Summer easily edges out Morty for the "next" best character. I think Morty's not stupid, he's just inexperienced and fearful. Rick sees great potential in him and wants to nurture it, but knows there's a danger if untempered, giving confidence to such an insecure personality can lead to evil Morty. I think part of the reason he keeps Morty in check is because he's afraid of that potential, because it hypothetically could rival his own. That business about canceling fields is more than just about cloaking detection. It's about fundamental psychological opposites.
Summer's the more fun sidekick. Morty's the light-hearted simple one that hints at taking a 180 tonal shift. Didn't someone say Morty's purging was actually a reoccurring pattern?
