Peridot stepping out into the rain. It was just done so beautifully, and every single frame of it worked into her character. Catching a bit of it on her finger, recoiling in fear, then examining it analytically was all a very Peridot thing to do, but after, when she actually decided to face the new thing head on and just step into the rain. Because that was probably the first time Peridot ever did anything because of a friend, since she doesn't seem to have had anyone she trusted before. I don't think they fooled around, just that they used to be friends and continued to hang out after Rose died but never really talked about what happened until Amethyst finally flipped out at Greg like she did in the episode. Mainly it got me because it was so genuinely, deeply mean and because it came with pretty much no buildup in a goofy episode about Greg and Amethyst watching a bad sitcom.
What I don't think they've ever really addressed (beyond this episode) is the fact that Greg also must miss Rose at least as much as the Crystal Gems but doesn't have anyone he can talk to about it due to them all blaming him for what happened on some level.

Sadly neither of these really hit me because I had already figured out what was going to happen before hand. I figured out that the gem in the mirror was a Gem like the ones we had already seen once it started talking to Steven and I figured out that the Crystal Gems didn't like their own kind and that gems from space were probably a danger to earth long before the episode where Peridot showed up.
Sometimes I don't like being observant, sometimes I just wish I could watch shows without knowing where the story is going, but I always know where it's going.

It's possible that that was the joke you are talking about, since coal is both the same colour and atomic matter as black diamonds but simply has a different structure.
