Start from like page 90, that's just before maggie does her plant shit that makes odin lose control of the ship and crash. That's a good place to start.
What happened before?
Maggie and Ava were on a schooling planet hosted by religious zealots that worship a man named "Titan", their past home was destroyed by some force that everyone knows about but is little known about to the reader. I forgot their name. Just before this force was coming to destroy the schooling planet, the kid in gray/purple, I.E. odin kidnapped maggie stating he was saving her from an impending doom. Ava saw this and followed behind in secret, Ava and Maggie have a past coming from the same home world, but Maggie hates Ava. Ava watched the planet explode as they take off in the ship. Maggie is still knocked out as I recall, and then ava is caught and restrained. And now you are caught up to the preceding events.

I think I figured out what the knives are supposed to represent. I think they are meant to represent how each character has used his/her agency/pact. Maggie has used hers as a tool to better her situation. Gil uses his in defense, and you can see how well that is working. Ava, having been with her demon, has two knives representing before and after the pact. In both instances, Wrathia has been mostly a pain to deal with.
