I dunno man. I'm watching it now, and the jokes are not that great, typical everything-over-the-top stuff with half the main cast being completely retarded.
It's a bit sugary hyperactive to me, but I like how Marco is a chill guy and some of the jokes are so over the top that they are funny (thermo nuclear butterfly blast, what the fuck).
I imagine the show comes off a lot better if you are at least drunk or something - on its own, it is a bit too crazy. I have to try grabbing a few beers and watching the last few eps that way.

I feel like this show misunderstands what people like about shows like adventure time and regular show. Just yelling about unicorns and rainbows isn't creative or funny. What is funny is the internal logic of those shows. I do sort of like Star but I really feel like it misses the point of the trend it's riding.

My reason? a competent male lead that isn't a cringefest buttmonkey. Also, because it's a fun lighthearted show not dragged down my the fandom that latched onto it like a darkhorse ensemble (yet), it is't weighed down by a sickening myriad of headcanons and wangst or anything like other shows, no pairing wars (though the people constantly bringing up Star x Jackie make me worry), and no one is constantly saying that it's the best show ever and you should watch it.
Basically, it's new, and fun, for now, so enjoy it.

I agree that AT kind of sucks for that reason now. I don't watch it anymore but the first 3-4 seasons really felt magical to me. Each episode would introduce some weird character or place that was completely illogical but also somehow made perfect sense. I never found myself questioning the internal logic of the show. They use them to go to Quest Buy and for visiting Mewni for the Diaz anniversary. It also comes back up that Pony Head and Star were never supposed to have them in the first place, which while not being a huge plot point I'm glad they didn't just forget. And in that line, Steven Universe, man it tried to do right what adventure time failed to do so with the lore, but it had to fuck it all up by adding constant unnecessary angst everywhere.
Which my brings me to my main point, why I love Star vs. : It's a colorful action show with a female protagonist that doesn't feel shoehorned in any way, shape or form, with a very competent sidekick that had believable flaws while still retaining the ability to kick ass and hold shit on his own, so far the plots have avoided the typical high school shit for a more magical approach that just uses the best of both worlds, the background music is god-tier, the magic star uses is always creative, she herself being a nice mix between a girly girl and a tomboy, Marco's parents are just a blast, and the enemies aren't just bad cunts for the hell of it, but monster with surprising distinctive personalities that are always fun to watch get their shit wrecked (for me Ludo is actually the weakest of them).
It's a cartoon that knows it's a cartoon and doesn't try to half-ass some deep plot shit, at least so far, and while it has it's flaws it's still heavily entertaining, and I just lovehow much latinos there are, I feel so good seeing my people as just characters and not part of some PR agenda.

Here's what I don't like about Star. Her power is her magic wand which just does anything it wants. SUPER PSYCHEDELIC RAINBOW BLAST BEAM!!. PUPPY TORNADO WHIRL!! To me this isn't funny and this problem is sort of persistent throughout the show. I do like Star but I feel like it's really missing the point.
In AT when you are introduced to a character (talking first few seasons here) you are taught the rules of that character and they stick to that. For example Jake the Dog can take any shape. That's it but its also enough and its used in hundreds of interesting ways. I don't like the overly complicated lore, it's the reason I don't watch the show anymore but I do feel like it executes that brand sugary humor much more instantly believable way than Star does.
I'm not trying to insult the show I just really have this feeling that it kind of misses the mark in that regard.

Although, the problem was ultimately solved by Star simply never letting her parents know about it, I wouldn't be surprised if Star fucked up so badly, her parents would have to come visit earth to fix it.

Above all of that she's fundamentally a good, kind person. She's not self-serving or arrogant in any way despite the above mentioned attributes of strength/magic and being an actual princess.
