Bedtime Story, /co/.

>Hello, and welcome to the Super Mario Bros. The Movie sequel webcomic!

>In 1993 Lightmotive Pictures released Super Mario Bros. The Movie, a live-action adaptation of the popular video game series. The film ended with a sequel hook which went unexplored — until now.

>Following discussions with original writer Parker Bennett, Steven Applebaum and Ryan Hoss have scripted a new adventure that continues right where the film left off. Join Mario, Luigi and Princess Daisy as they explore new locations and creatures inspired by the games, yet adapted in the film’s unique cyberpunk style.

>Will the Super Mario Bros. be able to survive once again? Read on to find out!

>Parker shouldn’t be so modest — he and partner Terry Runté were the first team to work on the sci-fi oriented concept with directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. They developed the parallel world premise and formed the foundation that later scripters would work from. They later came back and made final revisions, most notably adding the sequel hook. It is for this reason that Parker’s involvement in this project makes our work as canon and official as possible.

>The first page of the second chapter!
We’ve made some slight changes to the characters beginning in this chapter, which we feel were necessary for creating a more faithful translation of the film.

>The main update is that Mario and Luigi are now in their traditional jumpsuits rather than coveralls. We received a lot of complaints for that and knew it had to be rectified.

>The other update is that Mario is now trimmer than before. We didn’t want to fall into the trap of making the character squat and ugly, as is so often the case. Bob Hoskins is a very fit man; we wanted to capture that.

The heroes reunite with their respective ladies before Luigi asks an important, niggling question that the film’s fans have held for years. Could we finally get an answer to one of the film’s greatest mysteries?

Daniella is Mario's love interest and she doesn't say or do a damn thing throughout the comic yet.

>Yes, the shadow was cast by Yoshi! Everyone knew it, but it’s still so nice to finally see the little guy back in the story. After twenty years we can’t help but feel like Toad and Yoshi deserved these special re-introductions. The fans demanded it, so we gave it.

>We hope that you all enjoy Eryk’s take on Yoshi. We went for a very realistic and screen-accurate design, yet within Eryk’s personal style. We’re proud to say that the only change made was the addition of his head/neck ridges, which we feel are appropriate considering Yoshi has aged. It makes sense that he would mature in different ways.

>Finally, congratulations to both Cyberguy64 and Ultimate Hammer Bro for predicting a reference to the popular “Mama Luigi” episode of the animated Super Mario World television show. This reference also serves as a mythology gag to the original fantasy script of the film, in which Mario and Luigi encounter a mysterious egg that hatches into a baby dinosaur that bonds with Luigi. Writers Jim Jennewein and Tom S. Parker have assured us that they developed this plot point completely independently of the television show. Interesting bit of trivia, eh?

>Our first look at Dinohattan! Eryk’s talent with designing and drawing city scenes was one of the main reasons why we chose to work with him. We hope that you all agree that he’s quite good at developing that “Blade Runner” aesthetic.
Luigi and Daisy have a conversation about family, which is of course a very important theme in the film. We’ve continued that into the sequel

>Everybody remember this guy? He was seen briefly in the beginning of the film selling “fried Tweeters.” We decided to bring him back because we loved his costume design and felt that he would be a good re-introduction to the Dinohattan setting.

>Also, as a bit of trivia, they actually filmed an extra scene with his character which would have featured Mario and Luigi attempting to order food from him before realizing how disgusting the offered cuisine is. They had an Allosaurus Rat puppet scurry out from underneath the cart to steal a piece of dropped food.

Now, the big question is how did all of the flora get there? We all know that the parallel world in the film was dying out, so plantlife doesn’t make a lot of sense. Chapter 3

>When we first developed concepts for the sequel the idea of a park was something that immediately struck us as obvious. It would be the perfect way to represent both the development of the film’s universe as well as the themes of the story. It also called-back to the original scripts, which featured a scene of Mario and Luigi becoming lost in such a park. It really made a lot of sense.

>Daisy has brought Luigi into a greenhouse, where it seems that a variety of plantlife is being researched. It seems the main attraction is a rather nasty-looking carnivorous plant based on none other than the iconic Piranha Plant!

>We knew from the beginning that we wanted to showcase some of the game’s most popular flora in the park scenes of this chapter. It was a no-brainer that the Piranha Plant should be front-and-center since it best demonstrates that element of the games.

>The main issue, though, was that we have no reference for how the production might have interpreted the Piranha Plant within the film’s unique setting. They could have gone in a million directions; we had to be faithful to the film’s aesthetic without straying too far from what made the original game concept so interesting.

>For this reason we opted to do a more literal translation than what fans have come to expect with the film’s universe. We had no problem doing this as the very idea of a man-eating plant fits very well within the sensibility of a violent and chaotic dinosaur-dominated world. The only difference is that we made the Piranha Plant more angular in shape compared to the cleanly spherical original. Turned out very Burtonesque, we think!

>The Piranha Plants will be returning later in the story in a much stronger capacity. We also have plans to introduce other creatures and concepts from the games, so be sure to keep an eye out for them. (Also, look around for another iconic plant in the background of this page.)

>We are saddened to hear that legendary actor Bob Hoskins passed away yesterday at the age of 71.

>We were inundated with tributes from many people today via social media who were shocked that such an icon could leave us so suddenly.
Bob was a brilliant man. We didn’t know him and, unfortunately, never had the opportunity to speak with him personally. Still, we were friends with many of those that had worked with him over the years and, through them, felt his wonderful personality.

>We have felt the grief and sense of loss from those that loved him as more than just a man on a screen. He was a colleague, a friend, a brother and a father. We cannot just remember him for being Mario Mario, Eddie Valiant, Smee, or any other character because he was so much more.

K, back to the comic.

>In this page we introduce a new character, Mouser. We’re very excited to incorporate him into the story as he is actually the first truly original character in this universe. All other characters either existed in early scripts or deleted scenes, which makes their contribution to the setting more defined. Mouser, on the other hand, is a narrative free-agent. We can do whatever we want with him!

>Also, yes: he is Asian. We feel it important to include racial diversity in any work, especially one that can trace it’s origin to so many different cultures. It just makes sense to represent different peoples in a universe rife with ethnic heritage.

>We’ve been waiting a long time for this scene. It’s really good to be able to call back to Daisy’s mother, who was only seen briefly in the film.

>Even just a fountain in a park says a lot about Daisy’s feelings towards her new home, both thematically and narratively.

>This scene was also written as a parallel to the similar scene in the film where Daisy shows Luigi the fossil underground, which many people have speculated was the remains of her own mother.

>Now she shows him what actually remains of her mother in Dinohattan while in a tunnel-like setting. The main difference is that, this time, they actually go through with that kiss!

This is literally a Luigi x Daisy fanfic.

Many a pleb will tell you that Super Mario Bros. is a bad movie, or even a bad adaptation. The reality is that it is simply too good of an adaptation for most audiences to handle.

The truth of this fact is evident in any piece of Mario fanart you can find on the internet. What is the content? A dystopian Mario, a cyberpunk Mario, a hyperrealistic Koopas and Goombas Mario, a Mario that represents a communist uprising.

These artists pretend that they are innovators, but what they simply won't admit is that they stole the brilliance from visionary directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. They saw straight to the heart of the franchise and realized the potential it held, and from it they crafted the perfect film.

to anyone talking shit about the mario movie and how it should've been closer to the games: go watch the mario anime. it's almost exactly like the games, and it's even shittier.
the mario world does not work in movie form unless you tweak it.

Then...don't make a Mario movie?

It's not like we need one. The world got on just fine before the Mario movie was made and is a lesser place now for having it.
>>
I like Mario Bros (it's not a good movie) but this is dummmb

Everything seems to have SOME connection to the game counterpart, like characters based on enemies are at least still bad guys here... then you have Mouser, who's literally just some dude given Mouser's name with no other connection.
>>
>>70996629
psst.

i bet he's a traitor.

don't tell anyone.
>>
>>70987530
RIP Bob, you deserved better than to be remembered for being in a shitty super mario movie.

You deserved to be remembered for being in Roger Rabbit.
>>
>>70994176
Sorry, anon, but I agree that they're usually unattractive in the instances I've seen them. It's also weird when people either put weird things in the holes (I saw a guy with separate halves of a Barbie sticking out each ear once) or don't bother to put anything in them and have gaping holes dangling (though that mostly bothers me when it's people playing with the excess ear flesh in public).

vidya movies were a mistake

I own the DVD, you're not alone anon

I also really like John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins (rip) so that has something to do with it
>>
>>70986531
Wasn't Danny DeVito considered for Wolverine at one point too?

They were really aiming focusing on Wolverine's hairy manlet traits early in the X-Men film's production, weren't they?
>>
>>70988511
I liked the movie when I was a kid too.
As for the whole comic there is a shadow of trendy crap over it that does not seem right.

Like this.
>>71002566
Prince of Persia was fine, Assassin's Creed lineage could had been a neat tv show.
>>
>>70988511

It was always in the "So bad it's fun" category to me but the elevator bit is one of my favorite scenes from any film.

It's just so stupid but works so well in the film at the same time.
>>
this comic sucks, but i pretty much wore out the tape that had my mario bros copy on as a kid. fucking loved this movie.

Miyamoto said that the movie was too close to the games. I shit you not man.
>>
>>70987237
When she said, "Looks like someone wanted to join the party", For a moment I thought she was talking about Luigi's boner.
>>
I'm kind of glad this is happening.

Did you know John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins got drunk and drove away in a van with one of those sliding doors and John then broke his arm with? His cast is visible in a scene.
>>
>>70988511
It's a fun movie. It wasn't like that back in the day though because people were looking forward to seeing a SMB. film, and it kinda failed to deliver.
>>
>>71011210
Kinda the same way with Batman & Robin. It's fun now, but killed the franchise back then.
>>
>>70988190

Looks like the new artist dropped them along with the clothing change, which was a wise choice.

Well this certainly is a thing that exists.

Honestly, I think it's neat how it's adapting SMB2.

I like the new artist better, and thank fuck the ear gauges are gone. I will say though, I wish Weeg had more facial hair. It always kind of irked me that he was clean shaven in the movie. I understand if you don't want a full moustache, but maybe try a goatee or something at least.

Also Mario looks like Carl with his hat removed and I love it.

You are now reading Mario in his voice. I'm not sorry.
>>
I enjoyed this it was pretty fun I would like some more MoM
>>
>>70988511
I have a feeling it would be one of those cult sci-fi classics if it didn't have the SMB name attached to it.
>>
>>70988729
You mean the one where Peach hooks up with the dog and Bowser works at the Mario Bros. grocery store?
>>
