Anyone worried?
>>
>>64593533
It has already more than doubled its production budget. Why would anyone be worried about anything?
>>
>>64593602
Advertising. Remember Amazing 2?
>>
>>64593667
Unless the advertising was over 150 million. It's made that back too.
>>
>>64593533
About what, the sequel is greenlit already.

Brb, going to put on the number 1 album in America.
>>
>>64593667
They already announced GotG 2. Marvel gave Gunn a replica of the Orb for his birthday on a plaque that said, "That was a pretty good plan."

Just because Sony fucked up their advertising doesn't mean Marvel Studios is the same.
>>
>>64593533
Has it been released in China yet?

I'll admit, this movie was my first look into this part of the Marvel Universe (the whole outer space stuff which I'm sure has a better name that I'm just not remembering).

Anyone got a good place to start reading it in the comics proper?

>>

To prevent questions about Drax and Gamora being related. Although it's funny how it's now the opposite of how it was when Drax was green and Gamora was gray-but-slightly-green in Annhilation.
>>
>>64594105
Why so late? The high quality pirates and DVDs/Blu-Rays might be out by than.
>>
>>64594087
Maybe they'd think Drax and Gamora were the same species? They showed a lot of pink and yellow girls, I would think people assume they were the same. Sure Drax has red scar stuff, but you never know. Maybe if they were heavier with Gamora's yellow eye circles they'd have nothing to worry about.

It opens in China on October 10th. Once that happens, it'll shoot up. I mean, China is responsible for Transformers 4 breaking a billion.

More like the jokes won't translate well.

That's the main worry for GotG. That a lot of its selling point is the conversations, and that much of the jokes would be lost when subtitled or dubbed in other languages.

I mean, the Drax Metaphors probably would be entirely meaningless in Chinese or Japanese. Pure action films are better selling than funny movies in foreign markets for that reason.

I kind of figured this wouldn't be an uber money maker, at least not at this point, what with going against Bayturtles in it's second week. The new Expendables movie opens this Friday, this one being pg-13. That too will likely have a decent opening, further taking away from GotG.

Like others have said though, GotG 2 was already greenlit, so how much it makes from this point will only determine how much of a boost in the production budget the sequel will receive.

Or maybe it won't matter, Avengers 2 is likely to kill at the box office, and Marvel could funnel some of those profits into GotG 2, which is the keystone to further building up Thanos as a serious threat which will ultimately pay off in Avengers 3.

Man of Steel opened in June which is prime movie going season; Guardians opened in August, which isn't. Plus Man of Steel had a bigger opening weekend but comparing the days afterwards puts Guardians ahead.

If it remains in theaters as long as Man of Steel did, it should pretty close to making around the same amount of money at the box office while costing about sixty million less to make.

while I'm asking, what exactly makes Drax so powerful? (not that he seemed that powerful to be honest.. he came across as about equal to Groot, and I figured he'd be stronger)

but are you saying that most Kree are nearly as strong as Kree?

Cause even though they didn't show too many others, the few they did didn't seem nearly as strong as him.

To make a comparison, (and I'm not just saying this cause they both use hammers) it seems much like how even though all Asgardians are stronger than humans, none of them are nearly as strong as Thor (as you can tell from battles where they'll be struggling and he'll come in and take out entire armies by himself)

it seems like Ronan is the Thor of of the Kreem, but why? What makes him so special?

or is he not special and I just have it all wrong?

The only Kree in the movie was Ronan, his goons were Saakaran. Korath, who 616-wise is a Kree, was also a Saakaran.

Drax, in his Annihilation rebirth, essentially became Green Kratos. He cuts through anything because he has to, his sole purpose is to kill Thanos. I honestly think people wish he was a bit more RIP AND TEAR. Myself included.
>>
>>64602692
No, the general rule of thumb is double the production budget.
The production budget doesn't cover advertisement costs, obviously, which can easily equal the production value and, in the case of blockbusters, often exceed it. Obviously each movie is its own individual case but the basic guideline for judging the economic success of a movie is based on its intake being twice the value of its production.
>>
>>64602724
>what exactly makes Drax so powerful?

>>64602786

There was a Kree representative who the Nova PRime called and asked to call Ronan off, and he was basically like "not my problem, later bitch" but I don't know how that guy could extrapolate power levels from that one conversation.

>>
>>64602724
In the comics, he was reborn and modified specifically to hunt down Thanos. In the movies, I think it's mostly training 24/7 in order to stroke that revenge boner

And Ronan is the Accuser, which, at least in the comics, basically makes him Thor for the Kree, he's basically the Inquisition all rolled into one terrifying dude and given a hammer that controls a shitload of cosmic energy. They don't really go much into what he did before the movie, so I'm just going to assume the MCU Accuser position is the same as the comic Accuser position.

You might read Hickman's Fantastic Four & FF, it touches upon some of these events, though it's mostly to retcon them, but it's not bad if you can swallow the indignity.
After that you have a couple Avengers Assemble that will give you a taste of how Bendis is going to ruin the GotG, followed by the actual ruining in his GotG series. From Bug,Mantis, the psycho bitch that's killed of early, and the guy with the sentient power source to the team with Gamora and Drax.
>>
>>64602724
>while I'm asking, what exactly makes Drax so powerful?

In the comics, he was a spirit given an artificial body in order to kill Thanos but in the film he just seems to be a particularly strong alien that happens to be good at killing people.

>>64602724
>but are you saying that most Kree are nearly as strong as Kree?

In the comics, the Kree are much stronger than humans. It might not be that way in the MCU since the only other Kree we saw was the one talking to Nova Prime though Ronan being as strong as he was makes it likely.

>it seems like Ronan is the Thor of of the Kree, but why? What makes him so special?

Depending on his backstory in the MCU, Ronan is basically the Royal Executioner of the Kree Empire so that hammer he's lugging around is a particularly powerful weapon.
>>
>>64603042
transformers is 14th overall worldwide. over a billion dollars. i don't think they're worried. GOTG is still better of course and may eventually make more money, but lets not kid ourselves.
>>
>>64603166
Mantis stayed behind on mission control and Bug was considered a bit too much of a loser. That particular Captain Universe lost his powers after the Star-Lord mini and died.

When Star-Lord formed the Guardians for the first time, he decided to grab pretty much everyone who participated in Conquest and didn't have prior commitments - that means Rocket and Groot from his old strike team, plus Phyla, Adam, Drax, and Gamora.
>>
>>64602786
Less green kratos more riddick from pitch black but with a power increase.
Which makes vin diesels refusal to play the part all the more mindboggling. It's litterally the part that was tailor made for him. It's like nick fury sam jackson.
>>
>>64603175
I think the main question I'm dancing around is Would other kree be able to kick Drax's ass so easily? or is Ronan just special?
>>
>>64603445
Ronan is special
>>
>>64603445
Ronan, in the comics, anyway, is a Kree Accuser - he's been enhanced to the point where he's stronger than most others of his kind. He's not insanely strong, but he's about on par with Ben Grimm, and that hammer of his is essentially a small-scale reality warper on a stick.

The Ronan in the movie is a fair bit weaker (though it's hard to really say, given that he rarely went all-out and he was high on Power Stones most of the time) but if Comics Ronan is any indication, he's likely a ways above the norm.
>>
>>64603560
Thanks for the good post.

If Ronan is on Ben Grimm's level, what level would that put Drax on? (considering Drax looked helpless against him even before he got the powerstone)

captain america level? Going into the movie I thought Gamora would be like a captain america version of black widow and drax would be at least ben grimm level

very surprised to see drax getting tossed around that easily
>>
>>64603618
Drax was bulletproof, wasn't he? He got shot by those robot things. Overall, I don't think the movie was too concerned with powerlevels. Gamora seemed about as strong as Peter but with a lot more hand to hand skills, but then she could cut Groot's arms of with one swipe. But then later Groot is shown to be immune to most projectiles.
>>
>>64603665
I'm not sure Groot feels pain the way we do. Those projectiles went into him, but he probably ignored them. It's more about where he was hit. Much like you can shoot a tree in the trunk and it won't do very much to it, but you can bring a machete down on a branch and it will fall off.
>>
>>64603618
Drax in the comics varies a lot in strength. At his greatest height, he's about as tough as the Hulk, but shortly before Annihilation, he underwent a transformation that restored most of his intellect but made him a fair amount weaker. After that point, he seems somewhere in the area of "stronger than Spider-Man, weaker than Thor" - definitely superhuman and tougher than anything a normal person can throw at him, but not to the point where he can tank everything.

Movie Drax seems... yeah, Cap level is about right.

As for Gamora, I think that sword of hers might've been a factor.
>>
>>64603713
There's no way a human can cut off a tree branch with one swing of a small sword. Well, maybe a thin branch, but nothing as thick as Groot's arms.
>>
>>64599205

They get about 90% of initial weekend box office sales, that's quite a fucking bit.
>>
>>64603734
Pretty sure it wasn't a normal sword.
>>
I'm only worried that this will encourage Marvel to keep churning the same cookie cutter "shitty villain, barely a plot, very jokey" formula movies. On the positive side this will encourage them making more risky movies.
>>
>>64603734
no real sword but this is movie logic we're talking about.

I could easily see a non-supehuman samurai movie that showed a guy slicing an entire tree trunk with one strike.

That's just movie logic concerning swords

The logic goes something like: Anything non metal can be sliced in one strike, and if the sword is magic, ancient/legendary, or created by a grand master then even metal will become 1 strike

I'm reminded of the batman animated series episode where batman fought a ninja that once trained with him in his young days, and the guy chopped down a water tank in like one strike per leg or something
>>
>>64603752

That's why opening weekends are so open for studios; the share kept by theater owners increases as time goes by. Over the lifetime of a film's run, the general rule is that it averages out to be a roughly fifty-fifty split between studios and theaters.
>>
>>64603618
I think power levels get really fucking wonky in Cosmic, especially here.

Like, Drax ripping that security drone in the Kyln. You saw the extremis soldiers tearing apart the various suits in IM3, but the drones were made with alien technology in an alien superprison, so they're probably tougher than Iron Man's suits.

Same with Gamora, she doesn't do anything outstanding impressive, but when you consider the shit she's been through and how that's probably hit a lot harder than Earth shit would, she's a lot stronger than the film might initially imply.
>>
>>64603883
It's also quite likely that Star-Lord in the movie is mildly superhuman. He's specifically noted as having a different physiology than a normal person, and he has a resistance to the Power stone.
>>
>>64593821
what? sauce?

what was the "plan" exactly?

>>64599451
I case you're still here, or the thread is still here when you're back, or it isn't but you check the archive, I'll try to come up with something. The good thing about Mar is that he's pretty much self-contained.
But it'd just a chronological list, can't really tell you anything about whether it's good or not.

- Untold Legend of Captain Marvel #1-3 (a flashback miniseries from 1997)
- Marvel Super-Heroes #12-13 (an anthology series, mostly reprints, but it's where Cap M. first appeared, late 1967)
- Captain Marvel #1-21 (1968 series)
- Avengers #89-97 (Kree-Skrull War, pretty good shit for it's time)
- Captain Marvel #22-57 (with some gust apearences here and there, but nothing big to my knowledge)
- Avengers #172-177 (the second half of Korvac Saga, if you want to read the whole of it, it started in #168)
- Cap M. #58-62 (the series gets canned)
- Marvel Spotlight #1-4 (1979 series)
- Incredible Hulk #245-248 (something about the planet K'ai)
- Marvel Spotlight #8
- Marvel Graphic Novel: Death of Captain Marvel

Also, his son, Genis-Vell, PAD had some fun with him in the late 90s/early 00s. He first appeared in a few cosmic stories in Silver Surfer's title, a miniseries called Cosmic Powers, and even had his own miniseries, all in 1994-1996, but it's the 1999 series when the wild ride starts:
- Captain Marvel #1-35 (1999 series. It got restarted because PAD and Bill Jemas got a wager about who's funnier. Google U-Decide if you want to learn more)
- Captain Marvel #1-25 (2002 series)
- Thunderbolts #1-18 (2005 series, where he changes his name to Photon, among other things)

Also-also, since it's a pretty good read and one of the better parts of Secret Invasion (well, at least I think so)
- Civil War: The Return
- Captain Marvel #1-5 (2008 series)
He was later semi-important in Secret Invasion, but it was shit, so you don't have to read it.

What's even worse is that WB had the idea of a cohesive cinematic universe years before Marvel did. They've had Superman vs. Batman and Justice League movies planned before, with the intent of giving members their own spinoff movies. But WB and DC spent so much time fucking around and not getting anything done that Marvel not only beat them to the punch but have firmly rooted themselves as the big superhero movie company. WB is finally getting around to this but it might be too little too late, and time will tell if they can even keep this up.

$170 million is almost double the average spend.

If you can't make a movie for that much money because of your unholy acting talents, you need to give up. Warner Bros. of course inherited its current budget practice from New Line Cinema, after the problems over there.

>a superman movie should be breaking a bil everytime, he's SUPERMAN.

Only one Superman movie has ever made that much, and that was in 1978. (it was actually $300m but is around a billion at today's money). Superman II marginally outsold Man of Steel. The next nearest was Superman Returns, which made what would be somewhere around $450m today (on an insane budget, much of which was money paid to Nicolas Cage for not being used in a movie, but also probably a lot of historical legal costs associated with returning the Superboy element of the rights to WB). Warner Bros. didn't make the first two movies- they didn't even have global distribution rights to them.

That seems the going rate for a Marvel movie that doesn't have Iron Man actually; Winter Soldier, The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy all came in around that.

Green Lantern was the cheapest of the three big DC films and even it cost $200 million (which is roughly what the second two Iron Man films cost), which is quite a bit less than Man of Steel's $225 million (roughly the same as The Avengers) and a lot less than Dark Knight Rises, which cost $250 million to make according to the LA Times and that's even after considerable tax breaks.

Good analogy, but not entirely accurate. There are a lot of cosmic marvel heroes like Nova and (appropriately) the GotG who aren't necessarily all that tough in relation to some Earthbound superheroes, and they cruise around having spacecop-and-spacerobber adventures and getting involved in interplanetary wars between mostly-mortal alien races. A lot of the BIG shit in the Marvel Universe is out in space, though--like Galactus, the Phoenix Force, the Eternals, Thanos, etc.--and cosmic characters probably bump into them more often on average, while the Earth heroes called upon to deal with those threats are similarly the top-tier kinds of folks. For my money, though, the bigger threats in Marvel, on par with epic-level D&D, aren't from space but from other dimensions/realms, like Thor and Doctor Strange villains.

Sorry, that was the /v/tard in me. However i loved Batman films at one point. I really enjoyed BB and TDK was a great sequel - not as perfect but new and it had fresh ideas. However, DC only made trash after TDK hit billions. Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, TDKR, Man Of Steel ... the list goes on and on and all i want are good DC films. I hope they deliver on any of the 10 upcoming films. It's not that hard making at least a good film. I mean look at Marvel... i was fed up with all the Stupid SpiderMan3/GhostRider/FantasticFour trash and couldn't care less about Marvel films. But suddenly they creat their Studio/Universe and overtake DC in the blink of an eye. Marvel does awesome and i wish for DC to do the same, but they have turned into fuck ups.
