No gay characters, but I think the KurooxKenma is somewhat canon (I read somewhere online about one of the illustrators drawing the pair in a sexual/romantic sense and then being fired for doing that [idk]). But yeah - it's mostly about team friendship and the whole "never give up" thing.

Thanks. i'll pass then. I'm sick and tired of the lack of (non-stereotypical) gay representation in (non-porn) anime. Save half a handful of them, we only have vaguely homoerotic undertones and are supposed to be happy with that. I suppose this is the best we can expect from Japanese society.

One of the illustrators is a fujoshi who draws semi-official art of the characters in gay situations. She's probably the one who got fired. Kuroken isn't really canon imo, more of "i have no other friends because i'm an introvert with social anxiety and this one person is the only person who reaches out to me so i'm grateful i have a friend."
That said, I just said the same thing makes yamaguchi possibly bi.
Everyone canonically wants to fuck the team manager, so everyone is going to be bi at best.

If only I had any. I've watched No. 6 already, yeah, the relationship between the two guys is only 30% stereotypical, so I guess that's not too bad. There's still a (necessarily blond and shorter) uke and a (necessarily tall and dark) seme, the seme guy has a convoluted past that makes him shut the uke down, lack of communication plagues their relationship, when they talk it's in non-even-partly-finished sentences, and so on, but still, in comparison to the rest of anime, not bad. Also the story is quite good and the second half of the series is quite dark and well-written (the first half is unfortunately slow-paced filler).
Besides No. 6, there are apparently a couple anime with not-too-stereotypical lesbians (haven't watched them, sorry, gay guys have precedence in my heart ;-) and only one with a trans boy and a trans girl (as if trans people routinely ran into each other at school) (it's called Hourou Musuko, on my watch list nonetheless).
I'm really crossed at Japanese society being so homophobic (in a totally different way than western societies) that faithful representation of gay people and their relationships is virtually absent from an otherwise abundant anime production.
And given how progressive Japanese society is we're looking at decades before this changes even one bit.

I can never tell if it's a start of representation (society is usually marginally more accepting of lesbian and bi girls than gay and bi guys) or if it's just fanservice for the hetero male audience. I'm afraid it's just the later and I'm wishful thinking again.

I rant about LGBT visibility in Japan but actually, given how sexist their society is, until they have a feminist revolution and they sort equality for 50% of their population, I'm not counting too much on equality for our 4-5% minority.
By the way, what's the popularity of voleyball in Japan? I thought they were all about baseball, basketball and *do martial arts.
In France where I live voleyball is only mildly popular, much less than handball and basketball (which are slightly popular), judo and rugby (quite popular), and of course football/soccer (ultra popular).
So I was surprised there would be an anime about a voleyball team!

Sad but very true. Which is why I was so surprised at Shibuya allowing same sex marriage-like licenses. I am not entirely sure how these work, they do not grant the same rights as a legal marriage but it is still quite a bold, all things considered.

I have no idea, I know no one cares much about it in my country- Portugal- but I was forced to play it in high school. It is one of those sports where you are very likely to get injured or injure your own team mates if you don't know what you're doing.

Haha yeah it's true. I did play it in high school too. It's popular as phys ed and as a beach game, but not so much as a competitive sport.
If I understand correctly Shibuya's case is only symbolic, and their licenses are only recognized in another locality in Japan, I forgot which one. I suppose Shibuya's kind of the Japanese West Holywood then, but tbh it's been years I haven't been there so I don't remember much!

Volleyball is full of awkward moment, like when the ball falls between you and your teammate and both expect the other person to go for it. So you just stand there, blinking. That and having to serve and failing horribly. Volley balls are hard, serve wrong and the pain snaps from your wrist all the way to your brain.
Shibuya is indeed about as liberal as Japan can possibly get but it still surprised me. It has extended to another ward but I cannot recall the name either.
Even as a symbolic act it is something I never expected to see in my life time.

I've lived in Japan. It's not as sexist and homophobic as you make out. Most laws are down to the emperor not being dead yet. Anime is mostly aimed at middle aged men, and sports anime is usually for middle aged or slightly younger women. Anime is not a good represenation of representation in japan. They are very much like all developed countries going through a generation of liberal youth that will change things in coming years.

My favorite mangaka who shows a more realistic (as far as I can tell as a gaijin) view of gay life in Japan is Ebine Yamaji; she does good lesbian stories that sometimes have nice gay or transgender side characters. Can't think of a gay male equivalent to recommend though.

I lived in Japan too and although the sexism isn't as blatant like some western countries, it's definitely there. Good luck being a woman working for a company. They pretty much have to decide between pursuing a career or getting married and becoming a house wife. And even if they chose work they'll be stuck at middle management forever. Abe recently created a subsidy program where companies would receive a monetary compensation for every female employee that was promoted and guess what, not a single company even applied. But japanese women are much more ambitious these days so this is probably another case of needing the older generation to die out before any major changes happen.
Not to say it's not pretty shit for men too. They're expected to support the entire family and with the current economy in Japan it pretty much requires both parents to be working to support a child. So you have men and women that give up marriage to either pursue their careers or to escape societal pressure. This is one of the major reasons the birth rate is incredibly low in Japan. But things could suddenly change. I never thought I'd see the day when there'd be a huge protest in front of the Diet with people fighting against the new war legislation but also racism, fascism, sexism, and homophobia.

Although he's more famous for his gay porn, Gengoroh Tagame is the closest I can think of. He's probably the biggest gay artist in Japan right now and his recent (non hentai) seinen series "My Brother's Husband" has been a bestseller.

I have no idea where you heard that because anime is aimed at children, teens, and early 20's and the latter is pushing it. Of course you have otaku of all ages (what is the anime industry) but they are expected to hide that.

You'll have more luck finding representation in manga since it's not a niche market like anime. Hourou Musuko was originally a manga too. There's actually a comedy 4-koma called "Seibetsu ga nai" which translates to "I don't have a gender" it deals with all facets of LGBT but especially transgender and agender. But it's not translated or even scanned so for now you'll have to be satisfied with shitty photos on google.

I'm watching the series and I'm at the point where they play against Seijoh... Kageyama tried smiling, I burst out laughing.
The series is pretty awesome actually, I'm pleasantly surprised. The story's okay and the characterization is good enough. I sure wish there was some gay content though, especially between Hinata Shōyō and Kageyama Tobio. The ship isn't enough.

There is also a native term for 'volleyball', [排球]; read as 'haikyuu' but it is not very common.
As for 'distribution', that'd be [配給], also read as 'haikyuu'. Given that the title is written in kana, there is no telling precisely what it means but I am more inclined to this meaning.

I was more thinking of 'distribution' as in how the team needs to keep the ball in the air, thus 'distributing'.
There may also be a play of words involved as I've seen the title romanized as 'High Kyuu' as well, 'kyuu' meaning 'nine', Kageyama's number. A bit far-fetched but who knows.
