This place steams their burgers and cheese separately. Not sure how it would taste, usually the caramelization is a big flavor enhancer on a burger. Although I suppose if the cheese and beef are good, it'll still taste good.

That doesn't sound like it would work. It would just end up being a weird poached egg beef soup, the water would fuck with the cooking process of the egg. There are reasons recipes use specific cooking methods.
