Hot dogs are best as dirty water dogs, or deep fried but that's kind of a novelty.
Low on the grill util charred everywhere for most sausages (then preferably an oniony beer bath). That or you slice and toss onions in olive oil and salt, put sausages atop, then stick it under the broiler far enough away to brown it perfectly.
