Indisputably the best vegetable. So much variety. Raw, stewed, baked, reduced etc. The list goes on. This red little piece of heavenly nectar has fueled Italian cuisine for millennia. Where would the world be without tomatoes?

Let us have a moment of silence to honor the tomato.
>>

Italy didn't have tomatoes until the 16th century at earliest

As much as I like this fruit, it tastes like cucumber when you buy them in winter or keep them in the fridge for too long.

Not technically, but nutritionally and the way it tastes makes it closer to a vegetable, which is why society as a whole has accepted it as such.

Scientific imperialism.

Tomatoes are vegetables.
>>

>>
>>7534537
Fun fact: The first tomatoes to arrive in Italy were yellow in colour, hence their name "pomodoro", which consists of "pomo" (Apple) and "dorato" (Golden). Golden Apple.

Even Italians know tomatoes are fruits.

The very things that you are raving about tomatoes over are the result of it being a fruit, not a vegetable.

That makes it kinda relevant.

Acidity, fruit.
Liquid content, fruit.
Sugar content, fruit.
Flesh that can be cooked down to sauce instead of slime, fruit.
>>
>>7534561
Read a book dumbass.
>>
I greatly enjoy the smell tomato vines have. You know the one, quite a strong herb odour that just screams freshness. It's probably the one reason I'd choose to grow tomatoes myself even though I'm not in the right climate for it, I just love the way the plants smells.

Anybody ever tried smoking that shit?
>>
>>7534571
You can grow cherry tomatoes in a coffee tub.

A medium tomato has only 3 grams of sugar. Compare that to something like an apple which has 13 grams.

>>7534585
Yes I did, however the video does not contain Jack.
>>
>>7534583
I can grow them as sweet as apples.

You'll at least concede that it's biologically a fruit, no?
>>
Onion is the best vegetable desu senpai.
Used in every cuisine, a whole lot of foods (basically almost everything except sweet stuff), easy to grow and store.
Potato is a pretty close second I'd say because of it's variety (fried, cooked, boiled, deep fried, pureed, etc)
>>
>>7534594
In his defence, Strawberries are biologically a nut but nobody gives much of a shit about that in cooking.

>>7534595
I love onions but I hate how the ones I currently have started sprouting inside the fucking bag.

Attention! Some gentleman in this thread have been triggered and have sunken to the depths of calling me (OP) a "retard" because I said the tomato has supported Italy for "millennia".

I would like to clear this up. When I said millennia, I was merely exaggerating. Are you familiar with this term? But I digress.

You may continue the thread.
>>
>>7534606
Too late, we will forever laugh at you for this.
>>
>>7534595
oh yeah garlic for similar reasons as onion
>>
>>7534595
Good points. Onions and potatoes are close seconds. If they had a bit more nutritional value, who knows who could be first.
>>
>>7534603
>Strawberries are biologically a nut but nobody gives much of a shit about that in cooking

This is why I specified biologically. When it comes to cooking, what we choose to call things doesn't matter so much as the fact that we call them. Sunflower seeds arent seeds, but honestly who gives a shit?
>>
>>7534612
>potatos have no nutritional value
?
>>
>>7534626
I said a bit more, not implying they have none.
>>

>>

Okay, so not a sweet fruit, now compare to spinach or asparagus... You know vegetables.

Cucumbers are actually melons.

This is now a thread about things that cooks and scientists classify differently.

no they aren't, they are an aggregate fruit
also nuts are fruit anyway

Pic related, the only good tomatoes sold here in Norway (imported from the Netherlands, I think).

Big tomatoes taste absolutely nothing here.
>>
>>7534556
In the northen dialects is generally called Tomat or something like that
>>
>>7534556
Fun fact: potatoes are called pomme d'terre in French, from pomme (apple) and d'terre meaning of the earth.
Even French know potatoes are fruits.
>>
>>7538429
"Pomo" is a literary Italian term for apple.
Nowadays basically no one uses it anymore, but you can still find it in certain expressions e.g. pomo d'Adamo > Adam's apple
>>
>>7538779
It's usually the same in Denmark. If you don't grow them yourself, the big ones wont be very useful.

Vegetable is a culinary classification, not a scientific one. A "fruit" has both a scientific usage and a culinary one. Its a purely semantical.

A tomato is certainly considered a vegetable, and is the "fruit" of the tomato plant but is not a fruit in the culinary sense.
>>
>>7534580
In the context of cooking it's a vegetable. Get over it.
>>
>>7540880

>a tomato is certainly considered a vegetable

This has always pissed me off.

Why the fuck is a tomato considered a vegetable? Because it's sometimes used in savory dishes? So are many other fruits.

It's round, sweet, bright colored, has seeds, and can be eaten just like any other fruit. "Culinary Vegetable" is such bullshit.
>>
>>7540965
Why do you care this much?

Fruits are mostly all used in sweet dishes and desserts, although sometimes they aren't. Peppers and tomatoes are mostly all used in savory dishes, although sometimes they aren't.
>>
tomotoes actually pre-date the big bang
>>
>>7534571
>I greatly enjoy the smell tomato vines have

I like it, too. That's part of why I like raw green beans (with dip) so much. They have the same "green" smell.
>>
>>7534603
>I love onions but I hate how the ones I currently have started sprouting inside the fucking bag.

Is it a translucent bag? I haven't had onions sprout unless they were exposed to light for at least a couple hours a day.

Well yeah if you want to be botanically correct it is. But then you are going to have to include the following as "fruit":

Pumpkin
Cucumber
Squash
Eggplant
Avocado
Peppers of all kinds
Zucchini
Sugar Snap Peas
Green Beans

And as you can see that would be real fuckin stupid. Fruit and Veg are often used separately and much more frequently with their classification. Tell us the next time you see a tomato in a fruit salad, this is /ck/ not /sci/

>As a linguist, I'd say it's not a mistake

It is a mistake, you can't contract anything just because. Such a contraction would be utilized when the next letter is a vowel: "pomme d'air" for example would be correct.
>>
>>7541564
>as a linguist
There are no mistakes but there are only "occurrences non-normatives" for us, or non-normatives cases I'm not sure it translates well, because rules of language are pretty arbitrary when you look at them closely, and it's more interesting to see "pomme d'terre" and think about why he wrote it like this than to say "that is a mistake" from a linguistic
Pov
Now of course, as you said, it is a mistake
>>
>>7541621
What I wanted to say but I forgot : the mistakes of today are the rules of tomorrow
>>
>>7541629

I'm never going to accept texting type or twitter lingo. Never. I don't even respond to people on 4chan who type shit like "lol @ ___".
>>
>>7541656
It's probably not gonna happen, rules in language evolution is that it'll evolve in a way that it becomes easier for us to use, but the academy is also very strict these days and had his saying in this evolution, also evolutions take ages, of course there are new words and new way of using them, but for "@" to replace "at" in academy, science, art, etc. It would take like 200 years
Now don't be a butthurt about the way people use language, there is always a time and a place in which your way of using it offends people too

>for "@" to replace "at" in academy, science, art, etc

Do kids even learn cursive anymore, or how to write a formal business letter?

It seems like almost everything is done over casual emails and often texts these days. Academic fields will definitely hold out, but in a generation or two, when everyone grew up thinking writing like that is normal, it probably will become the norm.
>>
>>7541507
Still a fruit.

>Do kids even learn cursive anymore

Actually no. Not only do they not teach it anymore but the teachers get angry if you write in it.
>>
>>7540965
>Why the fuck is a tomato considered a vegetable?

It isn't.

The Compromise Tariff of 1833 set higher taxes and fees on the transport of vegetables compared to fruit. Since tomatoes were in high demand, they were ruled to be vegetables in the 1863 court case Nix v. Hedden so they could be taxed more effectively.
>>
>>7542110

The teacher is probably just sick of it because the kid never learned to write proper cursive and it's unreadable.
>>
>>7542110
>this is what public school in America looks like

In private school we were only supposed to write in cursive. What a waste of fucking time, when we entered the real world the large majority of people couldn't even fucking read it.
