Time for /liquor/

What are you drinking?
What do you want to try?
I've been wanting to get into rye whiskeys recently, started with pic related.

Also, how do we get rid of all the over-regulation of high-proof spirits? I dream of a time when anyone can say "fuck you InBev" and distill their own liquor without either spending years in prison or spending millions of dollars opening a tiny distillery that will fail in a few years.

It was called "The Gin Craze" and it was not a good time for anyone.

I'm talkin pre-prohibition, when liquor wasn't regulated out the ass, at least in the US. To distill spirits now, you have to record and report every mL that goes through your distillery, they're worried about Al Capone skimming some off, it's absolutely insane.
>>
>>7532064
The Gin Craze was pre-prohibition you dingus, it was 1690 to 1751
>>

I've been drinking moonshine the past few days, absolutely disgusting.
I'm interested in trying out a few more brands of vodka, the moonshine was cheap and from a mate. I live in New Zealand (unregulated distilling), so moonshine is cheap homebrew.
>>
>>7532077
That's totally different though, we never had that problem in the US.
>>
>>7532191
Because like every sensible country on the face of the earth since the Gin Craze, some form of regulation has been applied to distillation.

Why? They all taste the same. If you want a white liquor, you could at least go with gin or rum.

Russia Standard Vodka

A whisky that tastes good to me and isn't Hibiki again. I've had babby's first Jack, Seagram's 7, and Fireball. Currently have Bowmore 12, Maccallan 12, and Hibiki. Bowmore is odd, hate the sherry flavor in the Maccallan, and Hibiki is good, but not anywhere near $75 good, maybe $50.

I just bought this bottle today, trying my first glass now.
It's not what I was expecting, it's quite nice though.
Got a bit of a citrus taste to it and as weird as it sounds it has a meaty aftertaste that is pleasant.

I normally go for Islay whisky but felt like a change.

No, I don't own a fedora.
>>
>>7533516
That meaty character is probably the most distinctive thing about Craigellachie, it's what most people notice with it, so it doesn't sound weird at all. I enjoyed it myself and for some reason it's stupidly cheap around here. I got a bottle for $45.

Old Overholt is a great babby's first rye whiskey. It's a different style of rye (there's like a Maryland and Virginia(?) style of rye and I think it's a Maryland style rye?), so it's a bit sweeter.

If you like it, try Bulleit rye, it's very inoffensive.

If you like that and decide you like rye, try Knob Creek. It's basically the best rye you can buy for less than $60.

Also, beware that some Canadian whiskies call themselves rye, but it's completely different.

Some Calvados, I guess. I've always wanted to try it, but couldn't find any. I've heard it's kind of similar to applejack.
>>

Isn't calling it bourbon illegal?
>>
>>7535103

What? No.

Bourbon doesn't have to be from Kentucky. It just has to be corn whiskey aged in charred oak barrels and made in America.

Just bottled an orange liqueur and a strawberry liqueur this weekend.

With the orange, I put a tsp of allspice and 1 tsp fresh grated ginger in it for the last day of steeping before removing all the orange zest. Turned out GREAT. Too bad I've got to try to wait for a month to imbibe. For the next batch, I might try a bit of clove on the last day, or just ginger. The strawberry is good, but doesn't really stand out. I've made fruit liqueur now with about 6 different fruits, but the only one that's really impressive and definitely worth making multiple times is orange.

I'm making new batches like every two weeks too. It's going to be the year of inexpensive orange liqueur. Now I have to get some decent brandies to mix it with. What does /ceekay/ suggest for good brandy? I've really only had the standard VS Courvoisier, Hennessey, etc. I have some dosh--what's some really nice cognac for say under $80?

Any ideas or tips RE fruit liqueur either?

Nothing right now, but I'm about to have a little rum with some cider. Kraken spiced black rum with Kopparberg pear cider.
And I might open up the bottle of cinnamon-flavoured whiskey and take a big sniff, because it smells lovely.

> Stuff to try
Honestly, I want to try all of the booze to see if it's any good. Aside from vodka, because that is basically ethanol.
And absinthe, because I fucking hate aniseed.

> Over-regulation
Just don't get fucking caught.
Otherwise, it's sin taxes that are the problem. Taxes to discourage creation and consumption.
Taxes on booze, on cigarettes, etc etc.

>>
What absinthe do American bars or what brands available replicate the spirit the best?

Or is my quest for the spirit fruitless?
>>
>>7535913
your quest for the spirit is misinformed. There is nothing special or mystical about absinthe. Its "hallucinogenic" qualities have been debunked and the experiences reported by 19th century authors are, in historical perspective, the equivalent of high school kids pretending to be drunk off non-alcoholic beer.

It's a liquor that tastes worse than pretty much every liquor. That is the reality of absinthe.

It's supposedly not very traditional, but I got a bottle of this a while back and it was really good, everyone who tried it wanted more, including a lot of people who don't regularly drink spirits. You may consider this good or bad.

Personally, I'd only use Old Overholt in mixed drinks where the other ingredients aren't particularly strong. I made a boulevardier (whiskey, Campari, vermouth: essentially a negroni with whiskey in place of gin) with Old Overholt the other day and I could barely taste it. It just couldn't compete with the Campari.
