Had a big tasting yesterday for two open spots on our list. Ended up finding a good rose from Provence (at an aggressive price!) and a beautiful Macon-Villages that was so nice we finished the bottle before the tasting was over.

Tonight I'll be drinking pic related, but the 2015 vintage. Gonna be young as fuck, but this wine drinks fine young.

First time /ck/ poster. I used to work in a shitty chilean winery as touristic guide an got to know a little bit about wine, but I still want to learn some more: are there any good books/videos about different processes, terroirs, tastes or something like that?
>>
>>7499233
http://www.ucpress.edu/book.php?isbn=9780520276895
>>
>>7499233
There are lots of books and videos, but you really can't learn without tasting the wine. Tasting a variety of good wines from the world's important regions is pretty fucking expensive to do on your own dime.

I learned by getting enough of a toe hold in the industry that I go to go to big industry tastings. Then I started doing wine lists for a few places neither big nor upscale enough to have a dedicated sommelier. Then the sales reps came to me, and I got to taste more. And I got a reputation for finding good wine cheap enough to sell by the glass for under $10 in NYC.

Ten years later I'm down to just one successful list as a hobby I take seriously. I'm still good at finding undervalued wines, and my customers appreciate that. A hole is as likely to open up on my list because the price went up as it is that a vintage sold out.

If you're not rich and want to get into wine get into the industry. You already have some experience, so that's a good start.
>>
>>7498695
I know nothing about wine. A 2€ bottle tastes no different to me than a 20€ and it probably won't to most people on /ck/ and the genral public.

That being said the pic related I only use for cooking desu, when I ever drink wine I get a bottle from my local winery (5-10€ a bottle) and perfectly happy with it.
>>
>>7499884
>A 2€ bottle tastes no different to me than a 20€ and it probably won't to most people on /ck/ and the genral public.

Couple of years ago I brought some rieslings to a party, a cheaper one, and a more expensive one, and didn't tell anyone the prices. I poured out small tastings and then let people help themselves. The expensive one was gone in the blink of an eye, people didn't even finish the cheap one, they just moved on to other beverages. These were not "wine drinkers", none of them could tell you a wine they like by name, but with some kinds of wine, you can just taste it when it's shit quality.

It's really the dry wines, particularly dry reds, that chemical engineers have mastered the art of making the cheap stuff taste pretty much drinkable. I could probably pull the same trick I did with the rieslings but use cheap no-name grenache and some reasonably respectable priorat, and the preferences would be split down the middle. I'm not saying it's the same, I'm just saying once you figure out how to obliterate the more unforgiveable faults in a wine, it just comes down to having a "sophisticated" palate which is arguably the same thing as just finding pleasure in the more forgiveable faults and making up euphemisms for it (muh character, muh terrior, muh youthful tannins, etc).

Is anyone in CA doing a dry French style Sauv Blanc?
>>
>>7502111
Lots of folks are trying to get closer to French-styled SB, but honestly the climate is still not quite right in most places. Too much sun, and things get too tropical and lush. There's promise from some producers in Mendocino in my opinion. I had a nice one from a tiny micro-producer called Yamakiri recently.

There's a lot more, and better quality French-styled Chardonnay coming out of California to be honest. We also don't have the same limestone soil + climate combo that, say, Sancerre has. It just won't quite match up.

I'll try and think of some more CA SB that doesn't suck today and update you.

Margaret River is a great wine region.
We produce ALOT of wine in Australia, and have some very knowledgable and experienced people making them, we also have megafactories pumping out mass export garbage.
Some good stuff makes it to export but thankfully the best stays local.
Very rarely do I feel the need to buy Imported wine, and if I do its almost always French, because they just do things their way and a when Im in the mood for a Burgundy or a proper Pinot Gris imitations wont do.

I liked the red Massaya that was available up where I live up until this year - it tasted very much like a restrained Southern Rhone from a warm year. The Le Colombie seems to have replaced it, and it's equally delicious, but it's much heavier and not at all restrained. (14.5% ABV, massive dark fruit)

I don't like it as much, but it's great with strongly flavored food - lamb, vegetable dishes loaded with garlic, olives and the like (Lebanese food). But it's way too heavy for me to drink on its own by the glass, so I really miss pic related.

That said it's still a hell of a value at about $15 a bottle. And any excuse to support Lebanon, because those poor bastards get fucked over left, right and center. (I get Lebanese olive oil as well, and the stuff is also cheap and fucking delicious).

Massaya also makes a pretty delicious arak, if you roll that way.

I think it's because of their quality control laws. Spain designates qualtiy monikers based off off how long it's been aged, advertising how long is been aged is their way of marketing its qualtiy. I do wish I could get more tech sheets off of wines though, even if it's what the chemist was basing their guess on.

i allmost never buy a wine produced outside of europe.

Shit-tier european is often better than midrange american, African wines are slightly better but still not good enough, the rest of the world is just trash, fuck australia
>>
>>7504604
This is an exaggeration, but it's not entirely wrong.

American wines under $20 are almost guaranteed to be shit. There's a small number of ones that aren't, and they're usually out of stock at the store I go to. In the $20+ range, the options get better, but I always feel like I'm contributing to a charity or something. Like when I buy some tool at the local hardware store for $25 when I could have just gone on amazon and gotten it for $6.

On the other hand I can find endless bottles of $15 wines from France, Italy, Spain, Greece, etc that I'll happily drink every day.

>>
>>7505262
Wine also has more socialization around it, too. You maybe have a glass before dinner, drink wine through the meal, then maybe have a glass after. Easy to catch a nice buzz that way, but you have to work to really get drunk with it, whereas with liquor the difference between buzzed and wasted can be two drinks poured with a heavy hand.

More reds than whites desu senpai. I like light to medium body stuff, on the extreme end I had a brachetto this week I loved, called Anthos. Other favorites: red vinho verde, mostly any Piedmont nebbiolo, limnio, your occasional pinot noir.

But for whites, nothing tops chenin from the Loire. Anything from bone dry to sugar syrup. Although mosel Rieslings are fine too.
>>
how do i get into the wine world? i'm chilean so that's kind of a plus for starters
>>
>>7505625
If you're just starting on wines, I usually suggest a sweeter wine, A Riesling is good, If you don' know any better I suggest toads hallow, its sweet and there's better but who cares cause its cheap. If you drink spirits already Try porto, Its fortified wine and has a sweet taste to it. Personally I love ruby port, but I'm trying a whtie port soon thats supposed to be delicious. Also little off beat but Honey mead is good, Sky river is my personal favorite but its 20 bucks a bottle depending on your price range. Just start there and experiment. Try going to wineries, its a lot of fun.
>>
Any reccomended Oregon whites for under $20?

Yeah it won't really get "better" but it's not gonna go bad. Most (95%+) wines are not designed to age, and are meant to be consumed within the first 2-3 years, but they just slowly get less good, rather than die after that.
