You open them, then you eat them. I put them on crackers, usually saltines, sometimes triscuits. They do spray oil if you take the lid completely off, and yes, it does smell, but kippers are pretty goddamned tasty.

I only ever put them on pizza but make sure you wear gloves/avoid getting the juices on your hands because that smell will not wash away for like a day. Dawn works best at getting rid of it but its better to just avoid all that.

Take bologna, and squirt a line of mustard down the middle and roll into a cylinder. Cheap basic and easy. If im getting fancy then ill just throw some finely chopped celery, dill relish and mayo into some tuna and make tuna melts
