Things you will need:
>shitake mushrooms
>sichuan peppers (if not, then just find some red hot peppers)
>firm tofu
>scallions
>fermented bean paste and/or hoisin sauce
>garlic
>ginger
>corn or potato starch
>jasmine rice
Continue?
No, go ahead and stop now. This is /ck/, there is no interest in actual cooking.
I'm on the edge of my seat OP.

I hate tofu, and I'm still pretty interested.
OP next time get hammered and have a cat in half your pictures that seems to make threads here more popular.

>get hammered and have a cat in half your pictures
Unless it's Houston ghetto counter cat, no one cares.
>>7386815
Delete this.
I've wanted to make this for awhile now, but always considered the Sichuan peppers and fermented bean paste essential ingredients.
This is already miles away from Cooking With Dog's recipe, and I fucking love that stuff.
Convince me on this one.
>>7386863
they pretty much are.
the bean paste is pretty easy to find at asian markets tho
Red peppers are not a substitute for Sichuan peppercorn.
>>7386804
Whoops, forgot you will also need a teensy bit of
>soy sauce
Ahem, Act 1:
>sever shitake stems
>bring 1-2 cups water to a simmer
>simmer shitake stems into a broth (~15minutes), strain, discard stems if you don't eat them
>cube tofu
>steep tofu in boiling water
>for 15 minutes
>drain
>set aside
>get a wok
>add sesame oil
>stir in peppers, bean pastes over med heat until fragrant (1 min)
>>7386885
>not a **good** substitute
fixed that for you
If you aren't a weeb or autistic, they'll get the point across. That's not to say that using the real deal or even better, having some made by someone who knows wtf they're doing and has good ingredients isn't preferred, but saying NO YOU CAN'T DO IT is pretty dumb.
>>7386885
>Red peppers are not a substitute for Sichuan peppercorn.
Yeah, I saw that same argument word for word in the comments section on a website's recipe too.
>>7386829
>cat in half your pictures
Mmmm, cat hair.
Might have a beer in the final pic tho.
Act 2:
>add ground ginger and mashed garlic, stir in
>>7386905
no you cannot do it peppercorns =/= pepper fruits they taste nothing alike
you'd be better off substituting black pepper instead
Act 3:
>add mushrooms
>soy sauce
>a little bit of sesame oil
>more peppers if desired
>add the shitake broth
>cook another few minutes
>>7386928
I'm not the anon who's arguing they're the same nor do I think so. Your point is noted, moving on~
Act 4:
>add in the cubed tofu
>distribute over sauce
>dilute some starch into cold water
>add starch mixture to sauce
>sir
>>7386945
Act 5:
>add in a few scallions
>transfer to bowl over rice
WA LA!
Cheers m8s
>>7386911
They don't taste alike. There are better peppercorns that I would consider more similar, but black pepper is certainly not one of them. They still taste nothing alike, I would say even less alike than red pepper and sichuan. At least with some hot red pepper, you will get some of the heat and a little bitterness when dried.
We can agree to disagree, but I maintain that it's autistic to say YOU CAN'T DO IT. You can say you think it's shitty, or suggest better substitutes without being an autist. Like the Italian who always used to sperg when someone said spaghetti or the guy who would always sperg about sheppard's pie, or the (several?) spergs over beans in chili.
>>7386964
Meh, looks alright. Would happily eat/10.
You probably should have used some more scallions, considering how much you cut up.
I'd also do it saucier.
>>7386981
I have a fuckton of chopped scallions still. I'll probably add them to the rest of the batch. Or save them for a reheat.
>>7386966
I can't agree to disagree I cannot do it
Food looks great
Also, I'd like to thank you for not making your photos several megabytes, shit's annoying
Thanks op! Great post. Need more like this on /ck/
>no pet in cooking area
>>7386964
Looks pretty good, I like a truckload of sauce though. I don't even put it over rice usually, just eat it with a spoon. Never made any, maybe I'll try.
>>7387016
If you want it extra saucy make more mushroom broth. I didn't really buy enough mushrooms to make enough broth.
>>7386997
My pet is very patrician, and turned it away upon discovering I didn't use sichuan pepper.
>>7387036
