I want to make chicken soup with a whole chicken. I have one in the freezer, the packaging date is November 2014. Still useable? Chances of getting sick? Will I know if I start to cook it if it's spoiled? Pic is the chicken.
Youll be fine, just do it.

Its a "USE OR FREEZE BY" date, so as long as you froze it before the date you should be all cool. Those dates are pretty loose guidelines anyway, though. Ive eaten chicken nearly a week past the USE BY and been fine, and I cook my chicken medwell.

Lol you're some kind of wizard.

what
Appropriate freezing time for chicken caps at 6 month max. It's not good, but you'll most likely survive without the poops.

I've done this before. Unless you wanna sit in your bathroom for three days with toxic waste coming out three different orifices (maybe four), I wouldn't cook it.

For a whole raw chicken, one year in the freezer is the recommended maximum. Considering how cheap chicken is, just be on the safe side and get a new one.
Food poisoning is absolute misery.
The recommend time for freezing is to indicate freezer burn, not spoilage. It would be fine to eat, just the texture will suck.

You're not supposed to freeze it in that kind of retail packaging.
It's fucked.
It's going to taste like complete shit from the heavy freezer burn.

Let it defrost for a day or two in the fridge. After it's defrosted, open up the package and feel if there's any slime on the surface and check for any funky smells. If you're clear, you should be good to go. If not, than chuck it.
Best bet is to break it down and make chicken stock/broth. After simmering for several hours, the risk of getting sick would be greatly mitigated.

It'll be fine. Just defrost it, roast it, pull off all the meat and then make stock with the bones, then make your soup.
Is OP kill?

So, I've lived in Mtl for a while now and I've yet to discover this mythical "west island". It appears on no maps

Nope, I'm alive still. Test is tonight.
As you guys advised I opened it and felt for any slime and smelt it pretty thoroughly. Smells like normal chicken. I rinsed it and now here it is simmering. In an hour I take it out and take off the meat.
Fingers crossed, gentlemen.
Op should have fucked the chicken

Agreed.
On another note my boyfriend and I thought the soup was fantastic and haven't felt sick yet. So far so good. Thanks ck, your advice was much appreciated and useful.

Food poisoning can take up to 72 hours to show symptoms.
Good luck.
