I grew up with the murkastronk version, y'know with hamburger, bell pepper, onion, tomato sauce, and elbow macaroni. is there a more proper name for that dish so there's less confusion when talking with folk about it?

What the hell, goulash with rice or pasta, my eyes are bleeding.
Goulash should be eaten exclusively with sour bread or böhmische knödel (I don't know english name for this one and I don't wanna use my own language, so let's talk german).
Rice and noodles are damn atrocities to good goulash.

It's similar, but it usually has bigger chunks of beef meat and there's a lot less of tomatoes. Sometimes no tomatoes at all, only ton of onions, dried paprika and spices.

Sort of. My mother is/was Hungarian, my father is Czech so we're living in Czech republic near Austrian border.
I could eat goulash for life, but never with rice. Spaetzle might be one exception, but in 10 cases of 10 I would grab a slice of bread instead of anything else.

American chop suey is basically the same dish, even if Wikipedia tries to claim otherwise, but that has the same problem. The only other name for it I know of is beefy mac/burger mac/beefaroni, which sounds incredibly stupid to me.
In Sweden Gulasch is made with potato in it. I'll have youknow know it's delicious.
