I've only been to WB once (was in Austin for 2 days).

I got a regular burger. It was ok. Better than McDonald's, but that's not saying much.

Am I missing something? If I go back, what should I get?

Get one of the specialty burgers

A1 Thick and Hardy Burger, Chicken Strip BBQ sandwich, or maybe even one of the breakfast sandwiches.

Its like, about on the level of In-N-Out when Whataburger is good, I'd still probably go to Whataburger since In-N-Out's fries are shit, but its not really high tier or anything I guess.

Whataburger is the one place I use the little ketchup packets they give me. Their ketchup is great, its the best fast food ketchup.
