So I got a small bottle olive oil straight from some backwater italian village and it's nasty as fuck. Bitter, heavy grass smell and flavor and now I'm puckering up as well. Is this normal?

Yeah, it's so unrefined that you're tasting the bitteryfuckness of the olives. That's why olives are brined. I recommend you watch the Avec Eric episode "oil & wine". It's very informative.

What you have is a first press pure olive oil - the kind usually described by the number of coughs it induces when tasted on its own. It's not a cooking oil, it is a flavoring oil. On its own it's very strong.
