I do other work on the side (still in my field) for extra income because that brownstone you assume my parents bought for me wasn't so much a gift as it is a loan: they only put up the down payment (for which I'm quite thankful, I might add) and I'm paying them back in installments. On top of the mortgage, utilities and taxes. That's nearly 80% of my already paltry income.

I make about 130k/yr owning a small business. I have a one bedroom apartment. Constantly have to throw cash back into the business to keep it rolling, and it makes enough that I can't just walk away, but not enough that I can get ahead. The real value comes into play 20 years from now when everything is paid off and I can sell the fucker, retire, and live this same lifestyle, except I can finally do it sitting down.

That isn't a true 'private plane,' that's likely a fractional ownership deal where, essentially, you just by really expensive tickets -- but often less than what you'd pay for true first class international tickets.
