So I've just dedicated 4 years of my life to the study of this beautiful people and culture and I have a giant student debt hanging over my head, and no opportunities on the job market.

Years studying navajo archaeology, navajo language, navajo folk tales and religion, navajo civil infrastructure, navajo law, navajo mathematics, navajo visual art, navajo astrology, navajo music, navajo culinary tradition, navajo medicine, navajo tribal politics, navajo econimics, navajo finance, navajo agriculture and subsistence living, navajo informatics, navajo feminism and navajo theology, and all I'm qualified to do is be a federal representative on some godforesaken reservation.

I know I chose to go into the humanities, but surely there must be some transferable skills to the job market. I didn't just waste four years. I learned skills, real world skills that should land me a job.

Help me out /biz/.

who gives a shit about any of that? Sorry OP, but you've wastes time and money. This was a major mistake. You can try to convince some other retards to study that and hopefully you can teach it to them.

You can maybe write a book about it and sell it to friends a d family for short term survival.
>>
Why would you do that? I seriously don't understand the thought process behind this. You woke up one day and said: "I NEED to study Navajo culture." and went to uni? What did you expect?

Surely there're easy degrees like business admin which would at least give you something useful.
>>
Ask the Navajo for a job m8.
>>
Nice troll thread.

Really though, get a job working for the Department of the Interior in Indian Affairs.

There are also a lot of non-profits dealing with American Indians. Apply to those.
>>
All of which OP has listed is information that can be found online or from the local library. Nobody is going to want someone to breathe at them the info they can easily get from some non breathing computer screen. For free.
Navajo studies is one of the many courses that colleges have so you can spend your money to learn. Thats it. Now you know a little more, and now you have to pay.
Sorry m8. Shoulda learned a skill.
>>
>>998379

Thats honestly about your only hope. Work on a reservation (though most are very poor and cant afford to pay much of anything)

The only other option might be to work as a Park Ranger out west, but then again, government work doesnt pay very well. I believe park rangers top out at around 45k a year
>>
It really is a sad day when university has become more about the job market than academic endeavour. Case and point all the replies in this thread. I'm just as bad as all you cunts though, wanted to do history now after maths/economics bachelors/masters i'm an analyst and fucking hate my job. Luckily going to do a Phd soon to get out the rat race.

Supply and demand, I too could make my own #handmade paper that;
1. Is long to make
2. Is hard to make
3. Is way worse than regular paper
4. Is way more expensive than regular paper
But oy vey poor me, nobody would want to buy it. Where has this world come to?

>>
>>998467
On a related note. I know two hot hippies who make handmade paper and make enough to live comfortable lifestyles and pay 4 full time employees $13/hr.
>>
>>998403
why would you go into student debt and earn a useless degree when op could have learned all that shit for free from books?
makes no sense
>>
Do you guys think op is Riley, ihaz, or that investment banker autist kid?

If they werent hot would they be as succesfull?
>>
>>998582
Well back in the day universities weren't profit hungry cunts suckling on the tit of naive young people who think they are intelligent because they got into *insert dog shit university*. It isn't fair on them as they could just go into a trade. If it were up to me (in the UK that is) I would probably cut the amount of universities in half, increasing entry requirements to get universities back to what they once were. Then you will only get (by large) students who are dedicated and therefore you can learn from each other (as well as of course your professors/lecturers). I couldn't have gotten through my masters if it wasn't from the shared learning experience of my peers and I would't be half the analyst I am today.
>>
>>998631
I can understand where you are coming from but I kind find plenty of examples where employability drives course design rather than academic importance. For example, the only school in the UK who has a dedicated economic history department is LSE, isn't that fucking mad? OP's degree is an extreme example but we still need philosophers, sociologists, historians etc but the really bright, who would possibly have made good contributions, are turned off due to lack of employment.
>>
>>998327
Beat me to it. Hope you know how to read card sharks by now
>>
>>998632
Probably, but not as much

They do the art festival and music scene and sell online. They get a lot of hippies and middle age women sales online.

One is hot and the other is REALLY HOT. I have no idea why she isn't a model or actress.

>[...] historians etc but the really bright, who would possibly have made good contributions, are turned off due to lack of employment.

I would argue that this lack of employment is precisely what you need if you want those awesome contributions. Only someone with true passion can actually make these contributions game-changing and impactful. Jim Henson (Muppets guy?) Wanted to be a puppet maker but there weren't as many jobs as there was in puppets; everything was starting to go digital when he entered the workforce. He definitely made a meaningful impact, more than he would have if everyone and their sister was getting a CS I mean puppet degree.

That's pretty awesome, I'm a huge fan of NA culture.

but this degree ain't gonna help you in any way.

Why not just live as they do, in one of their communities?

Maybe you could become some kind of rep for their people to the government?
>>
People transition their degrees into other lines of work all the time. Just don't expect to rake in the big bucks and tons of job offers. Get creative and apply your skills to applicable work positions.

First, figure out if you want to work for someone else or yourself. >>998562 creative and other such endeavors (tour guide, writer, etc.) could support yourself. If you want to work for someone else, figure out how your skills translate.

I googled "what can I do with an anthropology degree," and there are a couple pages that detail interesting ideas. Did you do a lot of speaking with your degree? Did you do a lot of writing? Research? People who know how to research can definitely offer their skills to others in academic, scientific, history (museum/archaeology), and other related fields. Speaking? You could easily push into the non-profit world where a lot of the people look for others like you (they want idea people, or creature/culturally connected people). You could look into government, parks and recreation, national or state parks, or other such services, or connected educational and academic services. You have a degree, so you could join the Peace Corps if you want. If all else fails, go manage the McDonald's or a gas station next to the reservation (they get decent money). I mean, I don't think you're as limited as you fear you are. I'm just afraid money and location are going to be the difficult factors here (earning a good wage where you want... you might have to compromise here).

Navajo art / artifact dealer / - use your knowlege and make connectio to find the stuff and market it or open a gallery.

Museum worker / director - make exhibits, teach kids, study artifacts, give tours

Consulting work work for a mining company, etc. and you can be the guy who does pr with the locals (whoevers land your company will plunder)

Or on the flipside you can be an advocate for the navajo or other under represented groups.

Book writer / photographer

Work for nonprofits.

OP, my uncle is very into the Navajo people. I always got handmade gifts from them whenever he'd give me something.

He is a plumber who just happens to have a fixation on them. He has owned different RVs over the years and every year he spends 2-4 months living with the navajo people on a reservation.

You didn't really pick the most lucrative area of study, but you can live a fulfilling life no matter how you choose. Just do what you want with it.
