Ok, so I've got a friend who daytrades commodities from home, who keeps telling me that what he's doing is the same as what traders in companies are doing.

Is this true? Because it fucking doesn't seem like it to me. Fundamentally, what's the difference between trading from home and doing it as part of an actual firm?
>>
The difference is partly psychological. At a firm you're not trading with your own money.

He's also using much less money and doesn't have to be wary about liquidity.

I see.

Would the firms be using special data and tickers unavailable to me as a home trader?

tickers are just security identifiers.

they WOULD use special data, and have access to more financial products, info, etc.

There are several different types of "companies".

Those commodities could be part of funds run by asset managements which in this case is totally different from what your friend does.

Or maybe a prop firm, which in this case could very well be what your friend does.

How long has your friend been trading?
>>
This is relevant to my interests OP. How long has your friend been at it? Any idea how much money he makes or what his initial investment was? Does he use Ameritrade or somthi ng like that?

I trade commodities from home. I have all the info the big boys have (minus internal reports), the difference being they execute orders for their clients and i trade for myself.

I trade the Bund, Fesx and SP500. I am a scalper. I find levels off market profile that i think are important, use Bookmap and watch order flow on the DOM for quick trades.

Watch some of this kids videos, he is a beginner but is well on the right track.

Market Profile worked real well in natural gas until the algos came in and started regressing price action to the mean each day in 2008.

I don't trade Nat gas futures, but algos don't stop me making money.

To be a home trader, you need a fast connection. Faster than any domestic connection as it allow your algo's to respond to the market faster. People in companies will have access to resources that you won't even be able to dream of on special connections built and financed for trading.

If you have a shitty connection, they you may as well use it to just view porn.

That is true for say a scalper, but acting fast with a good internet connection is fine. Algos are basically market making. They will hunt 100 plus lot trades on ES for example by moving the price instantly against you for a few ticks till you puke and then they scoop up you exit. But again, they really don't stop you succeeding.

spoken like a true student, with no actual knowledge of trading beyond lecturers and books.

As your main source of income? How much did you start out with?

If you're running algos, you'd be better off leasing a VM close to the exchange.
