Hey /biz/ I apologize if this isn't the right board for this question, but I need a little bit of help. Should I put my current employer as a reference on my resume? It's only me second real job, so without them my references are kind of lacking. The problem is, they don't know I'm looking for a new job, and although I'm a great employee, they've been driving the company into the ground and quite a few employees are jumping ship. They're trying to do everything they can to make me stay, but I'm just no making enough money. My fear is that if I put them down and they are contacted they'll try to tank me so I don't get this other job. How many references should I have? I have 3 solid ones, but I was hoping to get around 4 or 5. Is there a way to put these references down, but show that I don't really want them contacted? Will this come off as me not being a good current employee if I don't add them? Any help is appreciated.

You don't need more than 3 references. Most HR departments won't even contact one of them, let alone 3. No HR department/recruiter is going to contact 5.

I know they won't contact 5, but as far as presentation goes I felt that 5 looked better than 3. I also have the fear that if I don't include any current references they'll assume that I'm currently a poor employee, which isn't the case. Maybe I'm just thinking too much into this, but I really want this job. I'm only making $11 an hour now and this job will start $14.50 + commission, and it would finally allow me to move out of my parents basement, so I'm really stressing about it.

NO

That's not my resume. That's a picture I pulled off of Google. I don't even know what language that's written in.

no. maybe if you're getting out of the military or your boss really likes you and knows you're following your dream but it rarely is a good idea

Latin. Lorem Ipsum is the gold standard of dummy text.

That said, don't include reference info in your resume. Just print out a separate sheet and hand it in during the interview.

Yup

Alright, that's what I thought. My boss does like me, and so does my lead, but they don't know I'm looking for another job. They company is making really shitty decisions and a lot of employees have left, so they're trying to keep everyone they can.

>>987765
That's what I did with my current job, however they stated that they would prefer the references attached with the resume.

Perfect, thanks for the reassurance.

I've never not had an employer contact my 2 or 3 references before, and I've have jobs from retail to corporate and everything in between

For some reason the less professional the job the more likely they are to call your references. I've never had Fortune 500 companies call my references before besides Applied Materials. My first job in high school was Carl's Jr. and they checked all 3. Go figure.
