I need some advice.
My dad is rather successful in real estate and I've been living off his dime. I'm 23 years old and have spent almost every day since I finished highschool playing videogames and watching Tibetan elephant paintings. I have absolutely zero business experience and have never had a job in my life.

Yesterday my dad told me I'm his only son and his biggest dissapoitment in life. He told me that for Christmas he is going to give me one million dollars and if I can't show him two million by the end of next year he never wants to see me again.

Could I get some advice on where I should start? Or should I just go to the casino and put it all on red?

Time for your first business lesson mother fucker.

Businesses are run on risk assessment. Doubling a million in a year's time with no experience, skill, or wisdom? Possible, but risky. The cost of failing that gamble (literally or otherwise) is being left with neither the support of your father nor the support of the money he gave you.

Your father isn't challenging you, he's paying you to leave. Take the money, run, settle down where the cost of living is low, throw the remaining money in the bank (or buy something that pays dividends), grab a meager job, and don't get too frivolous with your riches. Enjoy your million dollar head start in life.

Assessment over. I think we know which is the sounder investment. Don't blow this opportunity on some dumb battle of wits and pride.

firstly this. if he gives you a million why the fuck not.

secondly, your father failed you. it's fucking interesting when parents tell their children they are failures. because half of your potential is due to parenting or lack of it.

if he wanted you to be successful, he would have started teaching you from an early age the fundamentals of money and his business. but for whatever reason he didn't. remind him of that AFTER you get the million.

i hope you're successful eventually.

If you're seeking to impress your father or even just want to keep the cash but not fuck it all by the time you're 40 then join the military.

You get experience for whatever job you want in a civilian world, you get education for free if you don't wanna dent your million, and you can bank all your cash into a tax free no fee military bank account. Hell you'd even pull a profit from military pay if you just don't spend any of your million.

My thesis: anyone incapable of doubling a million is incapable of doubling a penny.

At this point, I could be OP's dad.
>>
>>964730
I'm not a millionaire, but I imagine you can double a million in a year fairly reliably if you know how what to do with it.
>>
>>964742
IMO it must be something hands-on where you can exert personal influence on risks, rather than something that is either sheer luck or low-risk (and low-yield).
>>
>>964724
>Have you already tried to tell them that you are gay
Yes, I have. Came out when I was 17. I started crying and my mom and dad came over and we did a big group hug.

Next question?
>>
>>964742
Maybe not double it in cash, but seems you could leverage one million cash into several times that worth of investments whilst maintaining positive cash flow. Franchises, rental property, etc. Your assets minus liabilities at this point might not be greater than 2 million, but you should be making at least 5-10k month positive cash flow. That should impress him just as much as it's likely what he did. If the OP is too afraid to try this on his own he should be able to partner up with experienced investors since he can bring the cash.

I say: stratification of risk levels (a.k.a. diversification). 80/20.

80 just sits and waits (ultraconservative, low-maintenance investment). 20 something very adventurous (if it is to make the required fortune). Best of both worlds: even if you fail, you still win = end up with basic income for life.

IMO involved risk must be of a particular character: let's call it "malleable", see >>964746. So nothing entirely unproductive such as casino, poker or dumb HYIP schemes. Possibly a human factor because humans are soft and pliable. A good kind of risk is also one that exploits the differences between you and normal people, giving you a competitive edge. This way you can hopefully turn "high-yield/high-risk" into "high-yield/low-risk FOR YOU".

P.S. OP is dead (assuming permanent IP) but I don't care because this thread is valid even without OP. I face the same challenge as OP.

Having an only child is a high-risk / low-return investment. If you want to produce a decent heir you have to spread your potential for viable offspring by mating with a diversified portfolio of women with different risks and benefits. A sort of genentic investment plan known as a 'harem'.

All great men throughout history have known this.

You're not going to make either of you happy by following his dream. In your position I'd tell him "give me a million if you like, but I'm not going to try to double it". If he actually went through with it I'd move out, see what I can learn about myself and the world, and do my best to never touch the million itself.

There's a lot of plattitudes that apply to your situation, but ultimately you need to find out what makes you happy and say fuck his expectations.
>>
>>964730
This is the only option, OP has shown no drive in life and likely won't even bother trying to start a business or really, do anything but play games until he loses his fucking mind at age 40 or commits suicide.

Putting all the money on red or otherwise lazily gambling it all away will leave you homeless. If you start a serious business or otherwise do something but fail, your dad might have some glimmer of respect for you and wouldn't throw you out.
>>
>>964963
>A sort of genentic investment plan known as a 'harem'.
Too bad when poorfags attempt to practice this sort of diversified investment strategy on their offspring, LOL = reproduction of poverty = heritable poverty.

Wisely prevented by China (thanks to the Communist Chinese Party, though only until 2013) but not by India (thanks to Hitler's ally Mohandas Gandhi). Effects are clear.

Obviously not an issue with OP's dad.
>>
>>965521
>Too bad when poorfags attempt to practice this sort of diversified investment strategy on their offspring, LOL = reproduction of poverty = heritable poverty.
Actually it was a good strat when kids actually provided a positive ROI, only recently has this stopped being the case with everyone milking parents for $$.
>>
>>965542
>only recently has this stopped being the case with parents being slightly less barbarian and more hesitant to milk children for free slave labour.
Fixed for you.

It was positive ROI for parents but how was it making children and, subsequently, the whole society, rich? See India vs. China for one model.

Here, a thing about the economics of... existence. By giving someone new life (as opposed to saving an existing life), you give them a debt. You (the parent). Not them. You owe it to them... not the other way round.

It was the wickedness of the Old World Order that parents added insult to injury of their children by:
(a) Distorting the reality to the point of inverting it and calling a debt a gift. #ParentTroll
(b) Literally cannibalism and sacrificing their first-borns on God's altar. (As late as until European conquest of America.)
(c) Trading them as slaves. (As late as until abolition in America).
(d) Using them as free domestic service, free labour and family goldmine. (As recently as child beggars and Michael Jackson.)
(e) Brainwashing children on behalf of the government and the society at large. (Of which false religious indoctrination is relatively lesser harm.)

This NON-SEXUAL ABUSE was initially curbed by Abraham of the Old Testament, then by Jesus Christ of the New Testament (who, roleplaying the only son of God, sacrificed himself so that other sons don't need to). But none of this will be complete until humans ultimately replace the cult of ancestors with the cult of descendants.
>>
>>965542
>>965615 continued.
A fulfilled life _is_ precious and worth living but it's definitely not cost-free. This fact may not be clear in natural environments, where so called "God" used to supply His creatures with all they needed for survival. But:
1) Homo sapiens is a cultural rather than natural creature: it differs from other animals in that its offspring is not born self-reliant.
2) He also differs from other animals by having rudiments of intellect and therefore greater needs than mere survival. Actually even many animals do to an extent: only see what impact zoo or farm existence has on them.
3) This fact becomes clear as our habitat becomes more and more artificial and our survival begins to depend on technology. Try telling your son born on Mars that you don't owe him oxygen supplies for life and that he must earn his oxygen. Or try telling your son born with a crippling condition that it's his problem, not yours. (Even more significant when predictable.) #ParentTroll

ok OP so here is what you do
you tell your dad that you did your research and you thought about it and that you are sorry
tell him that you will not take his money and that you will not double it even if you take it
tell him that you understand what he means and decided that it is time to grow up and ask him to teach you his business
this is all bullshit of course, but this way you can continue playing video games while doing a little work
>>
>>965219
>but I was a lazy shit cunt and just ignored him.
>I was lazy
1. You said that you spend all days playing videogames, so you are obviously not lazy, you just find games more exciting than business.
2. Let me tell you something: videogames are fun for people who have no real opportunities in life. They are an escape (the latest form of "opium for the masses") which you don't need because you can have real adventures. Real Life is the coolest, most thrilling, most realistic 3D game you will ever download.
3. Or... have you considered virtual economies? Some people have made non-virtual fortunes as traders in Second Life and the like. #BestOfBothWorld #WinWin
4. "Lazy" is a concept invented for the working class, so I guess your dad's parents weren't rich. Unlearn it and stay rich.
>>
>>965219
Holy fuck, I'm a complete opposite. My dad runs an advertising ad business and I liked it so I asked if he can open another branch so I that I can work on it, but he's like, dude, you should try another business experience and you might like it.

>>
Doubling your investment would be incredibly hard. Assuming you have no skills or contacts in the business world, and haven't done business before, it's almost impossible unless you get incredibly lucky during a black swan event.

Your Dad hates you. Don't squander your 1 Million on risky investments trying to placate him.

I would buy up low-cost-of-production commodity stocks as they near their lows of 2008, and perhaps invest a little overseas to play on the strength of the dollar (Canada, Australia, Russia, NZ).

Try to invest most of it into something that gives you a good yield, and thus can continue your NEET lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with being a NEET.

Viable strategy, but I guess it depends on what you term low risk/high risk.

Personally I'd just wait until a particular sector collapses, and then diversify my investments among the top performing companies of that sector and average myself in.

If US interest rates rise, commodities like oil and gold are going to take a shit.

Though you seem exclusively into stock markets, which is as passive as casino gambling, and marginally more productive than it (in addition to being infinitely more rational and lucrative than it). Stock trading gives small traders no control over risks, you can only accept them or refuse them. In result of this, the inevitable price of high-yield is irreducible high-risk.

Meanwhile I'm in favour of active, hands-on business in the high-risk band/stratum of portfolio. See >>964746. Something along the lines of >>964688 or Second Life (or some more recent virtual world) playing for money.

That's because hands-on business allows you to manipulate involved risks without needing to be a billionaire and:

Ok, I will give you some serious advice here which is DOES work as I do it myself.

I work in construction in Australia. I am a project manager for a tier 2 developer.

I was introduced to this by my boss who has been doing this since mid 2000's.

He has learned which developers build quality buildings and which ones typically retain their value the best.

He now purchases from these developers off plan apartments at valued locations.
He then sells these imminently after waiting the 3 years for completion and makes at least 100k profit per unit.

I have done this twice already buying from Mirvac.

My most recent purchase was at Harold Park in the city of Sydney. This will complete in June.

This strategy all depends on your city though and country.
