I am going to community "meme"-college in Ontario Canada rn while redoing a few highschool courses online so that I can apply to University after(doesn't seem I'll get much if any transfer credits but w/e). And I was planning on studying Accounting then going for a CPA as I plan on moving to another country in the future and that seems to be among the most highly respected degrees/designations abroad from what I've heard.

So I was wondering if I should ultimately just stick with memeunity college or actually try to get bachelors degree in Accounting. Is Accounting a meme? Could some people who work as Accountants chime in and describe their workday and memestatus. Thank you.

Pretty much a meme.

>long hours

Only if you get a professional designation does it become tolerable

just be sure to:
>know excel
>get great grades
>work while schooling - they love that shit

Thanks bro I created it myself lol. I think i did ok on the eyes, had to draw them on. Well really I didn't do all that much but it looks snazzier colored.

>>know excel
I use openoffice/libreoffice. Le freedom-respecting software face, could I still use these though? I don't seem to notice any proprietary differences in them, other than the obvious how it's a little different to do some things but they can be done all the same.
>>get great grades
That's le plan senpai.
>>work while schooling - they love that shit
That's the plan.

Kinda broke so I'll need to and I'm going to try my absolute best to try to get into the internship program.

>my job is a fucking cakewalk and I can chill 6 hours a day and do what I wish.
That sounds great man, pretty much what I wanted since I want to work on my business/freelancing while earning a considerable salary. I was planning on going into Finance at first but when I learned that 60 hr weeks were standard kind of changed my mind.

CPA would probably be a lot more. Pretty sure it's at least 100k/yr as the lowest.
>>
man dont do it, i took some accounting classes in uni regarding my businessIT degree and it sucked so bad i hated it.
leave it to the Goldbergs do deal with your accounting, if you have a decent auditor to control them, you'll be fine. Go study something you really like

B-but it actually seems quite interesting from what my hs accounting courses I've done. Seems really not that bad but I'd probably need to work a few years before I could make a decision, like any job really which is unfortunate since it's hard to tell in advance.

I'm a former audit intern in a small firm and current stereotype cubicle bean counter accountant at a financial institution.

It's not a meme. You can make a decent living off it. I was pretty much a C student in all of my accounting classes in a state university and I don't have my CPA yet. And even I landed a full-time gig making a pretty decent wage.

If you actually do well in school and join Beta Alpha Psi, you should be able to make bank.

I actually found audit to be more fun since I was traveling around. The old-fashioned bean counter positions can get tediously boring, but hey, you got to do what you got to do to pay the bills.

Anything else you want to know?

How busy is it usually and what are usual hours per week?

How can I make myself stand out to get a decent job right away?(already planning on playing intramurals when I get to uni and working)

Any other tips and advice or little things some people might not realize or know about accounting?

>How busy is it usually and what are usual hours per week?
Very busy. I almost literally don't stop working from when I get in until I leave. I'd say my average week is between 45-50 hours just pure working (not including lunch or commute).

>How can I make myself stand out to get a decent job right away?(already planning on playing intramurals when I get to uni and working)
Going to sound like a meme, but pretty much what everyone else said. Good grades, go to any networking events you can and try to get a part-time job while in school if you can handle it. I think when the big 4 was recruiting when I was in school, you needed a 3.50 GPA or better in your upper level accounting courses to be considered for an internship. So your grades in the accounting courses will be the most important. You're not necessarily fucked if you don't get A's, but you'll likely be looking into the second or third tier companies for internships, like I was.

>Any other tips and advice or little things some people might not realize or know about accounting?
It's a lot more normie than it's portrayed to be. You need to have good people skills, especially if you wind up working in audit. Also, like I said, some accounting positions are really boring. There are days where I dread going into work just since I know I'll be looking at Excel sheets with tabs full of dull data. Not all accounting positions are like that, but be warned that some are, so make sure you're willing to spend 10 hours a day just staring at Excel M-F
>>
>>960752
Thanks senpai.

I'm going to try my best to get an internship since at the uni im most likely going to go to they have them for 18 months which seems amazing for making a good impression on them and also getting nice work experience.

Also can I use OpenOffice/libreoffice memes instead of M$ office? I fell for the /g/ memes and now I can't use anything except freedoms -respecting software.

Stop calling everything a meme. Holy shit, based on the way you write you seem like one of most self conscious people on this board.

Corporate accounting is 95% based on the ability to present complicated situations to business owners who only want the abstract. The other 5% is research skills.

If you can't get through a simple question on the legitimacy of accounting without using the word meme then your job seeker status is a meme. This is a sector of the business world based purely on being able to present yourself well to every other person you ever deal with.

You know the 'meme' that the guy in accounting is busy crunching numbers all day? That guy is an inhouse CPA or the controller of the business. Most accountants are freelance/consultants.

Go learn what a consultant is and seriously reflect on where you are getting your information and writing skills.

it's very meme. but if you have accounting degree that does not mean you end up doing accounting. most accountants have completely different jobs not related to accounting at all

not true.

It's long hours for 6 months, then slow for 6 months.

the money is still good, but it isn't what it used to be.

And if you're not comfortable being stuck in a little office adding shit up all day, then don't be an accountant.

OP, I would say just go to a CPA office and ask if you can intern for free for a couple weeks, so you can get a feel for accounting.

After 2 weeks, make your choice.

Don't make the mistake I did, which was majoring in something I never even tried out first.
>>
>>961817
Fuck that's good advice.

But would they even take on an intern if you're not an accounting student? Unpaid internships are banned in Canada quite recently(pretty sure I read this a year or so ago).

I'll try though but as >>961775
said, couldn't I just study accounting but work as something else? I've heard a lot of Finance jobs think highly of accounting courses and quite prefer it for many positions.
>>
>>961823
An Accounting grad can do everything a Finance grad can do and more, plus there are 100x more jobs out there, do Accounting then if you still really want to minor in finance do it is what I wish I did
>>
its a very useful degree, whether u plan to make a career out of accounting, or move into something beyond. The knowledge and experience you obtained is very useful in all kinds of business.

only butthurt unemployed finance, STEM majors, NEETs would mock accounting degree holders or jobs for being boring and wageslave.
>>
>>960165
I would imagine accounting is really useful if you want to start your own business

I'm going to take a few courses

bro. just walk in and tell them whats up.

"hey i'm considering being an accountant, but not sure if its for me. Would you mind if I came to the office for 2 weeks from 9 - 5, and just shadowed you guys to learn more about the business?"
>>
>>964102
Just seems a bit autistic dude...

Would they really want to just spontaneously let some random guy follow one of their accountants around?

>Oh hey Mr. Goldstein, this guy wants to be an accountant he's going to shadow you ok?

Doubt they'd let a random unaffiliated with a university into their office...

>>

You're delusional. A public CPA firm would never allow some random stranger to come in asking for an unpaid internship especially when they handle confidential financial information.
