How many active users / day would a forum need to generate some sort of decent income. Maybe $3-10/day? (adsence etc)
I have an idea for one, but I am not sure how I would direct users/traffic towards it.

I don't think adsense allows forums.
But on a regular website you could get like 8 to 15 dollars for 1000 visitors.
Some people manage to get it all the way up to 45 dollars while shitters might earn 1 dollar.
It's easy to get and keep up if you actually work on it.

I have the idea in mind already, domain and site is live. I just need to select what topics to add and how to get users.
I think adsense is allowed if there is no sexual / illegal content on the forum, I will read the terms before adding them into the site.

Well, perhaps they do allow forums. But I think you are taking the hard route trying to build a community without your own content.
