"Subletting" a room. What sort of legal documentation should I try to obtain? The person I rented from seemed fine just giving me keys-- said they could just leave them in the mailbox (I've only paid half of the first month). Is that a red flag? It's a shithole apartment share but should I be worried if they hand me keys before asking me to sign anything? Meeting them again later this week

if its not its a home
then they would be owners and most likely asked you for an id and did background check
a copy of the lease or rental agreement should be given to you unless the situation for the agreement is settled just between both of you in case it shouldnt matter as long as you get a receipt of the payment made from them ...

I did this over Craigslist. Girl I leased from was clueless or way too trusting. I wrote up a quick few sentence statement that I have paid $x to rent (address) for the period of (dates) and we both signed it.

No ID or background check. It's a shared apartment, couple others live there. Rent's month-to-month. It seems that oral agreements are legally binding in my state but formal, written documentation is recommended.
Mostly I just don't want to come home and find all my shit gone someday
Guess it kinda worries me also about the other tenants that there's no background or even income check
