I am an electrical engineer.

Its the lamest fucking job ever. Do not go into electrical engineering. Boring as fuck. Should be suicide tier.
>>
>>1316576

I studied Philosophy

I would definitely agree it's shit-tier

Military is definitely NOT shit-tier if you do something good. I know someone who's an officer in the Royal Engineers. That's a pretty great job.
>>
>>1316664
I'm actually about to do it. What's so boring about it? Don't want to kill myself
>>
>>1316664

What do you do in it?
>>
>>1316676
>>1316678
I design data centers and other small data rooms. You do CAD drawings, write specifications, spec out equipment and just deal with bullshit.

Most of it has to do with my salty attitude toward corporate garbage. But it can't be entirely me, because pretty much everyone I know has gotten out of engineering after a few years. A lot of them are in related roles, but no longer do actually engineering because its painfully fucking boring and repetitive.

I've left twice, but have had to go back because I went broke. Hopefully the third time will be the last.
>>
>>1316695

As I posted earlier, I'm in information systems and have wanted to go into data warehouse design. Am I likely to encounter the same kinds of problems doing that?
>>
>>1316703
The IT side of it is probably much more interesting than the infrastructure side, but I don't know much about IT stuff.

If you are interested in infrastructure, this white paper pretty much lays everything out. http://www.pueda.ch/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Uptime_Institute_Data_Center_Tier_Classification_5th.pdf

The only recommendation I have for anyone is go into computer programming. It offers the most flexibility of any field I know, while still offering decent pay. But I feel like computer programming might be in a little bit of a bubble now - kind of like the oil jobs were before the bust.

Ok, thanks. That seems much more like the physical infrastructure side of things than logical design and requirements analysis, which is where I think my strengths lie.

I know everybody's into programming now, but I can't seem to work up any particular enthusiasm for it. I'm studying SQL, Java and Python but to me they're just means to an end rather than something I could see myself doing full time.
>>
CS, first year
>>
>>1316728
I hear ya. I started to take one of those udacity programming courses to change fields into programming and got bored with that too. I'm too old to go into programming now.
>>
>>1316734

If you know your engineering nuts and bolts but don't want to actually do it, why not go into tech consulting? A friend of mine did EE and is now making bank as a consultant for Telstra (big telecomms company here in Australia).
>>
>>1316744
I mentioned almost everyone I know has left engineering - they have left for those types of jobs.

I have a super spotty career history now, so my options are limited. Employers hate the excuse "I quit my job to pursue day trading." I won't last much longer doing this shit. I'm about to the point where I would rather make 10 bucks an hour at a pizza shop than do this shit.

>>
>>1316762
Fair enough, if you don't enjoy the field, you don't enjoy the field. But I think writing off EE as the "lamest fucking job ever" is somewhat extreme. It demonstrates that salary/prestige/whatever is no fucking way to choose your career, and I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.

My sympathies, anon.
>>
>>1316576
I'm finishing med school this year
>>
>>1316768
I am very biased I admit. I also have experience in only a portion of the field. But I can't recommend anyone go into a field similar to mine. Quantum computing may be fun. Data center infrastructure is not.

Yes, I am very salty.

College major is literally a meme. All you need to do is figure out what you're good at and then use that to make money.
>>
>>1316768
>prestige

Prestige is such a bullshit normie concept. Can you eat prestige? Can prestige keep me warm or pay off my bills? Do what it takes to make money. If a pornstar makes more money then you, that literally proves that society finds this person more valuable to you. "prestige" is how normies cope with mediocre.

"A..at least I'm a doctor! so what If I have to wait ten years before I make money, America despises me and my patients don't trust me. I have prestige!"

"S...so what If I have 500k worth of student loans I have to pay for law school. I'm a big fancy lawyer now! Sure I'm getting a shit salary to do shit work for 80 hours a week but I have prestige!!!"

This, if you want to invest, see it as a hobby, not as a means of getting wealthy. The wealth part will come later after you become skilled in something.

>I like working with computers and stuff

Computer engineering student here. CE isn't like building computers, but, if you want to learn how they work then do CE. Secure job, good pay, respected by other people, you aren't stuck with computers, you will be valuable in other roles like programming (if you learn a few more languages than what college teaches you), finance people like all engineering students, but, especially the "hard" Engineers like CE, EE, ChemE, Aero, etc.

You probably won't learn much about computers in first year other than maybe an intro to Computer science or some intro to programming classes. But, it gets real heavy on the electrical part of Computer Engineering in 3rd and 4th year. It is challenging, but, rewarding.

Pornstars make money because there aren't that many people willing to degrade themselves on camera. There are more people with the potential to become a doctor or a lawyer than there are attractive people willing to film their gaping asshole.

Compensation doesn't translate into the significance of your work, it only measures how replaceable you are.

without a doubt pay for your education over investing. There is 0 chance that you will be able to beat the loans interest rate as well as the compounding interest that you will be subject to if you don't pay it off.

Also, the time saved from being fixated on the markets.

Yes, there is math. I HAVE to take atleast 3 math classes as well as 2 pure physics classes.

Once you learn that math, the math in your electrical classes and other stuff you learn in CE is relatively easy.

If you reckon you could handle the quantitative stuff in CE or any E really, I would recommend you go for it. But, if you can't, go for programming. Not SoftE, if you did SoftE you will be doing math classes as well.

I suggest you learn programming at a programming boot camp if you want to programming. There isn't that much hands on stuff other than circuits and some other things. You will get to do a fair few labs stuff just in the intro physics and engineering units.

either analyze data or Just bullshit businesses that hire you. Management consulting is a field that takes people in with any kind of degree, so the consulting you will be doing is the same as the consuting and english major would be doing, do an internet search. and harass your professors about what kind of jobs the other math masters students did after graduation. there are plenty of in the field of operations research. so do some internet research.

Senior CmpE major here. You might want to watch out if you aren't good at math. Depending on where you go math may be intense at times, and with any good program it should. Just know that if you decide to go in that direction. Not that hard work can't overcome it, just know you would have to work at it if your math isn't strong.

IT isn't awful and still related to computers. Every company now has a network and needs people to manage it. A friend of mine, equally as smart as I am and capable of doing the math for CmpE, started out as CS but changed to IT. He works for a consulting company that manages IT services for several businesses.

CE here. A lot of people drop out because of weeding classes. Maths and physics are pretty big weeder classes. They have the heaviest content in the early years.

no it's not, it's taken directly from the taxes you pay (or will pay in the future), although the real punchline is that you aren't paying for your own uni, you're paying for other people to get degrees in liberal arts, and then paying for their unemployment benefits when they don't get a job after graduating

normally you have to do a double degree with law, and it opens up alot of avenues into business. i know a few people who did law and moved into stuff like HR, risk management ect. and are earning relatively a lot of money in their late 20's. they dont even have to do the 12hr grind young lawyers do.

Graduated with a degree in mining engineering. Couldn't find mining work because I had no co-op experience, had average grades, and graduated at a time when the industry was suffering (2014). It's still suffering, as are my peers - I looked up my graduation cohort on linkedIn and crunched the numbers. 39% of them are employed as engineers, and 31% of them are employed in a mining-related field. Pretty shitty overall, but such is life in a boom-and-bust industry.

My work history since graduation has been pretty checkered. I did civil engineering for 8 months because I wanted to get engineering experience for my P.Eng. I had a reasonable pay rate and it was a great learning experience, I loved my boss, but the work wasn't for me. Now I'm a metallurgical EIT and volunteer at an MIT-accredited Fab Lab. I'm making reasonable money (55k/yr in a low-cost-of-living area), am highly respected by my co-workers, have extremely flexible hours and love the job. All I do is design and improve metal-purifying systems. So far I've managed to create 99.99991% pure indium from 99.99% pure material, and I'm fairly sure that I'll be able to achieve 99.99999% purity in my current production run.
>>
>>1327801

con't

I'm not sure if I'd recommend anybody becoming a mining engineer right now. While the money can be great (my buddy is making six figures, untaxed right now and he's just 23 years old), it's a tough industry to break into and you can't understate how rough looking for work is during a bust in the industry can feel.

On the other hand the metallurgical sciences are actually really fun! If you can get a gig like mine and enjoy learning all day and actually getting to run experiments with an experienced tech to help you out, I'd suggest giving metallurgy or the materials sciences a chance. Maybe I'm a little bit autistic in that I actually enjoy troubleshooting and collecting data, but a lot of you are too. Give it a go if you're looking for a fun career.

About to try to do finance major and computer science minor

Anyone know if these disciplines are good for making money? (my preference is to work in field regarding AI trading)
>>
>>1328017
Be really good at programming and you will make 6 figures starting. That said, the places where you get 6 figures also happen to be expensive.
>>
>>1328023
thanks. do you recommend any particular language?
>>
>>1328036
To put more context, my friend got an internship at Etsy which turned into a full time job, so he didn't search at all. He makes 6 figures. He uses the LAMP stack at work. If you really want to make the money, you really need to have the skill and be able to demonstrate it.

To answer your question, it really depends on what you are trying to do. If you are trying to get a job, I would recommend building a portfolio of your work to help you get hired. Also, if you're in school, learn the theoretical stuff(data structures and algorithms) as that is the one advantage you get over self learned programmers. If you are starting out, the language doesn't really matter, but I would say Python, just because it's so easy. Once you learn one language, learning others is much easier.
