People would be able to pay off student loans pretty easily if it were. Take out double the needed loan amount, put half in an EE bond, cash it out in 20 years, pay off entire loan.

It creates a race to the bottom where because some people borrow to buy a thing the price inflates beyond what it should be since the purchasers in sum have more available funds. Then everyone has to borrow money to buy the thing to afford the new, higher price.
