/biz/ I need help. I'm a software developer for 10 years -- but I'm unmotivated. I have some killer ideas, including one that I wrote a prototype for. It was a huge success at one company but really just fitted for them. I want to write a commercial version.

But I find myself unmotivated. Not just for this software, but generally, in life. I'm on meds and not depressed but just don't feel excited about getting the business done.

The one exception is when I read books of others starting up companies from nothing. Others, like Art of the Deal are neat, but it's hard to get motivated by people will millions to start with, you know?

I liked pic related. I've seen a few other software-company small business books but need more. Recommendations? Can be pure code motivation, or small business motivation. Ideally both. Thanks!

Notch is great but it seems like that was more of a stroke of luck, you know? I'm looking for more sustainable businesses that didn't have gigantic exits.

Though I enjoy Notch esp with his recent bantz

OP are you thinking ERP type of software?

Fuck, I just recommended Founders at Work in the book thread on /biz/! I didn't even know about this book!

How technical is this one though?
I'm not a programmer, (and do not play one on the internet), I just like the startups early days stories, the real details help make it real to me. Some of the stuff is a bit crazy.

sounds like you have some burnout

try getting laid or taking a vacation. also would suggest taking LSD

No it's a technical assist tool for a niche type of company. Can cut many departments in half employee count; it's that efficient.

Coders at work is not super technical, just mainly about how really good coders code.

I've been feeling like this for a long time. I've taken time off. Got on meds after docs insisted (bipolar). I get laid. Do LOTS of drugs including LSD. It's like I just don't care. When I do for for clients, when I actually get around to it, they're happy and it's solid stuff.

I lay in bed thinking, and I come up with really great designs. I'll even write pages of notes. But when it comes to sitting down and executing, I get repulsed. Even for coding for fun, even when I actually enjoy the coding a LOT. (Competition and such.)

But most days I'd just browse 4chan or read books or distract myself other ways. I'm not suicidal, but I think it'd be a relief if I had some massive tragedy or won the lottery or something where I wouldn't have to ever worry about doing stuff ever again. I don't know what to do. I have a child, so I can't even just kill myself even if I wanted to.

why dont you pick up a hobby and forget about coding for a little while? maybe youre putting too much stress on yourself and putting it off out of fear of failure.

you're probably right
