KEK BE UPON ME
FOR THESE SHALL HAVE A GOOD WEEK

TVIX

TVIX - I could get down with betting VIX goes up this week. volatility always goes up on the week following memorial day (not sure if this is true but .it might be? i'll try to find some C&Ps from other websites that support this view)
i think i'll buy some call options on ^VIX

>he thinks tvix is a bet on volatility
>he doesn't realize it's a bet on bets on volatility

oh that's even cooler! no, i am not familiar with this, but i have faith in you so i'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on this and buy some anyway. so is it like an option where you pick a strike price and expiration date? what kind of returns do you think you can make if the vix went up by say %10 by the middle of the week?
profile on yahoo finance says 'The investment seeks to replicate, net of expenses, the returns of twice (2x) the daily performance of the S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures index'
is the a security that replicates returns of 5x?
how about 10x?
how about 100x?

That would multiple risks (and therefore losses) exponentially. Your appetite for risk scares me. Just go the casino man.

I'm not planning on losing money...
1000X?

i was just asking the question. just curious.

you get to see which people are betting on volatility going up by buying shares of tvix
what you gain is what you gain. if you have 100 shares and it goes up a buck, guess what? you just made 100 bucks...

sounds fun, will have to check this out

I doubt you even understand what VIX means
>>1260441
remember, it's a poker game
>>1260444
i don't need to know the intricacies of the vix to play the tvix
vix is implied vol in the sp500 so obviously you would look to that if you're trading options, not if you're trading on whether or not people are trading volatility
options you don't really trade volatility though you can trade vol arbitrage and more so mean reversion of volatility

who gives a shit. i'm a degenerate gambler, you nerd. anyway, i'm not betting my life savings on this. i'll probably put like $500 tops on it. that'll be enough to keep me interested in watching the ticker to get a feel for it.

If you aren't confident enough in an investment to go in for real then you shouldn't bother
>>1260707
you're right, that's good advice but i'm not going to follow it all the time. there are likely some people out there who have lost money on investments with 'great fundamentals' that they were completely confident in. if i were a smart man, i would just buy a bunch of index funds and re-balance once in a while, instead of gambling on individual stocks, short term options etc.
