Most of it really is basically common sense (go for a company with good earnings history, pay good amount of dividends, healthy cashflow) but you got to do the research yourself. If you're gonna listen to your broker, then accept that there are chances they're gonna rip you off.
If you want to get better rates than bank deposits, go for preferred shares. They're not volatile yet pay good amount of dividends.
The more intricate ways of playing will come to you if you really put an effort into it.
Speculation though is very risky. High pay off if luck is on your side but the thing is... are you still liquid when luck presents itself?
