Wendy’s (WEN) said that self-service ordering kiosks will be made available across its 6,000-plus restaurants in the second half of the year as minimum wage hikes and a tight labor market push up wages

http://www.investors.com/politics/policy/wendys-serves-up-kiosks-as-wages-rise-hits-fast-food-group/

Guess what, you "servers/waiters" and "bartenders" are next. Get ready.
>>
>Guess what, you "servers/waiters" and "bartenders" are next.

Not likely, they'll just keep paying them $2.50 and subsidize with tips up to $15 like they do now.
>>
How do people there?
What if I want to pay with cash?
>>
>>1243004

I for one, applaud Wendy's.

Grew up in japan as an army brat... always liked the efficiency of payment machines in restaurants.

Most of the time, you just want to sit down, get your food, eat while you text/surf and leave.

No need to make tedious small talk with an annoying waiter that you have to tip.
>>
>>1243011
Waiters will be replaced next, don't worry

Just how much do you think a payment machine costs?

They're under 10 thousand dollars for standard models w/ touchscreen & voice nowadays. That cost can be recovered by a few months of work from a manual employee.

Just look at japan as an example. Most small restaurants use payment machines... they're not cost prohibitive.
>>
>>1243029
if they'll save $$ ~2x years down the road, then any bank will loan them
>>
>>1243029
> capital intense
I could design a general purpose self service kiosk for less than a hundred bucks. Tech is ridiculously cheap. Sure they can't buy them for every store right away, but it wouldn't be too far fetched to get it done over a year.

The only money pit would be maintenance and possibly security since nigs will certainly have zero qualms about shooting and stealing from a robot. Still this solution would be both cheaper and me efficient than paying retards $15/hr to take an order.
>>
>>1243038

yup... just went on Alibaba and you can snag yourself a good payment machine for as low as $4,000.

All it takes is for the consumers to adjust what they're used to and boom... waiters are irrelevant. All you need are chefs and one or two bus/runner boys.
>>
>>1243006
Cash is already being phased out dude, if you aren't using a card sucks to be you. Although they could just use something like a vending machine and let you slip it in. Or an ATM

Great. The less work that needs to be done by humans the better.

The only danger is that this increases inequality, which can be counteracted politically.

Automation means there is either less work for people to do, meaning more free time, or that people can work the same hours on something new and we produce more stuff.

>lets be intentionally inefficient to create jobs

Unless you live in Cali. $20 hour plus stock options here.

Additionally, larger chains have already started. Granted it's limited but you can order appetizers, drinks and pay your bill from a tablet at the table.

It literally says that is the reason in the article.
>>
>>1244550
The best case I ever heard with fast food was an econ professor I had. He said he was a rebellious kid, left home, resorted to fast food for money, found out the basics of the labor market, became a shift and then store manager, and eventually came to manage real estate for Jack in the Box before quitting in 2006, when he sensed the real estate market was thinning. Before he quit, he came to own a dozen stores. Now he teaches econ for $97,000.

bartenders have some use... usually they have some big titties and flirt with me while I get drunk.

Bardending is alot more soft skills and socializing than other service jobs...

Of course I'd prefer a live girl to a machine serving drinks.

I could care less if a teen or a machine is taking my money for a fucking drive through sandwich.

It's already in a number of non-chain lunch shops I go to near my office downtown. It's easier to "train" and set up, and takes up less space behind the counter than a person in an area where floor space is at a premium. I can only imagine that trend increasing if wages go up.

I'll gladly put in the effort to push buttons on a touchscreen if it means I get the correct order. That job was never worth minimum wage even if done correctly (which it never is).

Fuck waiters too, I don't need someone to walk it to me, I'm not that lazy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3QfHgtQ7q4

If I'm going to any restaurant it's because I don't feel like or don't have the time to cook, I have the time to touch buttons and walk to the counter when my buzzer buzzes.

As for human interaction if I want it I'll bring a friend to dinner, I care much more about them than the waiter and I'm sure the waiter feels the same way, they only care until the tip is on the table.
>>
>>1245620
replaced by increased productivity, yes.
alot of traditional lawyer work for example involved pouring over thousands of documents which can now thanks to advances in reading AI and general AI be made into programs that take far less time and less humans to do the same work.

That's pretty cool, I wonder if the government will retaliate in some way to prevent robots from taking over fast food.

If everything gets automated the value of the products and services decreases until we approach post scarcity.
The loss of jobs will lead to revolt.
We are witnessing the last hours of capitalism as it starts eating away at its foundations.
In fifty years we will have reached an impasse and the industrial era will be a closed chapter.
>>
>>1245680

Productivity can be increased resulting in less nurses needing to be employed.
Once you had to have your blood pressure taken manually and it had to be done repeatedly while under critical care. Now it's done automatically every 10 mins by a machine.
This means more people can be cared for per nurse as they require less direct attention. Just chuck them in a bed, hook them up to everything and walk away. Don't even need to return to record tests, it's all stored for you.

I dug ditches in the summer when I went to college. I made well over $20/hr. My girlfriend's dad was a street sweeper and snow plow driver until he retired. He made ~80k/yr and didn't have a a fucking high school education.

I think what you meant to say was that we employ fewer now due to advances in machinery. The jobs are not done by robots.

Also automated cashiers was an inevitability. The wage increase didn't cause this to happen, it just made it more beneficial to do it sooner. Look at all the places you can just order your food online now and pick it up.

Gotta say this is a good idea. I worked at a Wendy's in high school for a few months and the front register is utterly pointless. First off, there are two stations, but managers would refuse to open the second one so lines were crazy and one person would work the pointless task of "fries". Aka fill a basket with fries, put on a timer and do it in time. If you want more than minimum wage for that, you have legitimate issues. About the front register, it is extremely easily set up that anyone can use it, only thing is almost everything had to be approved by a manager. Any order over $50, any time trying to remove something from an order after 30 seconds, gift cards. By having a computer automate this with a cash option(like a vending machine) so many headaches and time would be saved by the managers
