Right now I'm a sophomore in MechE at a top engineering school. By the time I graduate I'll have had multiple internships and I do research in a Professor's group. My goal is to make as much money as possible post graduation. Should I go for an MS in operations research or go into industry?

I just started on my computer science bachelor. I'll likely go for my masters as well. What are some things I can do in the next 5-6 years during my education to maximize my market value as a software engineer?

e.g. Certain internships, best programming languages, experience with certain software (Linux?), ect.

Join a society and take part in the competitions it holds. They give you real experience and are great for networking. Learn as many languages as you can on your own time and always find interesting problems to solve that can be used in a portfolio.

My old man makes 6 figures as an EE working in defense

He's been at it 25 years and usually gets a 5% raise just for meeting bare minimums

He skipped management as a career track and he mentors the new young missile engineers - I think the idea is that the managers are avtually more disposable and this way he's in a better position to be hired back as a contractor after retirement
>>
>>1235902
How does an extra two years qualify you any more than someone with an associates? Maybe you give yourself a bit too much credit. A bachelors degree is still not shit.
>>
>>1236149
Isnt associates just gen ed, so if you take 2 years, youve barely even taken the courses for your major? Vs 2 not byears of classes only engineering related?
>>
dad makes about 120k as an electrical engineering professor, he has a phd and has been at this particular job for 9 years, but graduated with his bachelors in '95

He doesn't have to work any specific hours, except for about 6 hours of teaching a week, so long as he gets his work done. That being said, he probably works 8 hours on weekdays or less, but he also works Saturdays for about 6 hours and Sundays for about 3.

For me, working odd hours in potentially dangerous situations and having to be accountable for any mishaps. And these mishaps are seldom cheap.

In Finland engineer cannot make six figures, dollars or euros, unless he makes it to senior manager/director/partner/CxO level.

But hey, at least we have welfare!

at the end of the day skipping the management track is the number one way to stay fulfilled and interested, who cares about the extra pay
>>
>>1234436
not relevant.
relevant it whats your earning compared to the rest of your environment.

Shit thread if cost of living not taken into account. How many of you within a couple years of graduation are spending half of that on rent in New York or Silicon Valley?

>>1236162
My school almost the first two years are full of math, science, and gen-ed requirements with a few intro engineering classes mixed in, before going into two years of major-specific courses.

I don't see how you could do a full engineering curriculum in two years, just seems like it'd be gimped.

>>1236232
It's not about making 100k mid-career or anything, but it's pretty unusual with a Bachelor's and no experience.
>>
>>1236338
