Is it illegal to figure out the pattern of a casino game and win off it?
No, it's not illegal. But, the casinos also have the right to bar you from playing. For example, they'll kick you out if they suspect you're counting cards in blackjack.
It IS however illegal to exploit glitches in slot machines and video poker and the like. The house always wins my friend. Don't even try to beat them. Even if you do, especially if you do, they will find a way to get you back.

What constitutes a gitch though. I'm not hacking it I just notice an incredibly obvious pattern

depends.
ex-croupier here, used to rig shoes of baccarat with several other workmates when cards didn't come pre-shuffled, of course we made it so it wasn't obvious, win some, lose a little, ultimately kept it safe with around 4-5k winnings per week. Never been caught, what's your idea?

What do they do if they catch you? Is it like the movies they beat you up
How long did you run your scam?

hahaha mate, i recommend you get a basic understanding of casino procedures before you try anything.
Nah we don't get beat up, I knew many co-workers who outright slip 1k chips under their watches (VERY STUPID), once surveillance investigates an error in the balance of the float, they slow down the footage, fire the dude and take legal action. Basically you get done for larceny. Ran my scam for about a year and a half, then procedures changed and all cards now come pre-shuffled in a locked box from Japan and are destroyed after using them once.
I can help answer your questions but let me know your idea so I can either call you a genius or a dumb ass.
