Not really a data analyst so it might not be exactly what you're looking for but I am a GIS analyst.

I like it a lot but I also like combining maps with data too which makes the job pretty tolerable. I make about 50k.

I have an ArcGIS certificate and I learned R and SQL in college. I'm taking classes for HTML and CSS right now. The job is really cushy. Just sit and work with maps all day. I'm trying to move toward GIS development work if I can.

Up for the potential

Doing an information systems degree right now, hoping to get into data analysis or database administration.

I'm scared as shit that it's gonna be outsourced though, so I'm doing business analysis stuff as well.

I'd also like to get into GIS but I don't know how big the industry is. I'm also interested in health informatics/data.

GIS is pretty niche but has a lot of potential for industries no one expected even 10-15 years ago. You work with the same kind of data for the most part in a lot of places but one year you could be mapping gas pipelines and the next helping build infrastructure in 3rd world countries. The modern world has a lot of room and interest for GIS. We've only seen a slight downturn in the last 1/2 year to year or so but I'm hoping it picks up soon.

Most places will want a certificate and BS at least. Information systems could work just as well but unless you really love maps, I'd stick to the IT/CIS sector and develop your skills there. There's a lot to learn on both ends.
