Is playing poker for an income still a valuable option in 2016?

not as good as a decade ago when you could easily crush everyone lol but if you're good at it it's pretty nice since it's tax free on pokerstars

Aren't online casinos filled with bots?
>>
too much of a time investment for the returns you get, at least imo
>>
>>1153907
this is becoming a problem
>>1153859
this has become a problem
best way to fight against it is to play live. the money is worth it, the edges are larger, and the winrates are bigger

a standard win rate for a live 200nl game is 20/hr
>>
plo is better. online is filled with bots and rumor is a lot of them have various sites shuffle algos cracked.
>>
>>1154191
plo is actually worse if you don't know the math behind it. the variance can be huge, and most people don't know that you actually need to buy in at least with a 200bb stack to effectively play your hands.

though, you do run into your edge more consistently than in hold em. just, you're going to be getting into a lot of 2-1 spots, instead of 3-1 or 4-1 like is regular in hold em
>>
>>1154191
I recently asked about this on a forum, the consensus was that that rake on PLO is retardedly high, which makes it much less profitable than Hold Em even for the bigger winners
>>

>poker forum
Is what I meant to type.
>>
>>1154228
>>1154232
I heard that too, so instead of playing with a bankroll and spew chips into rake you go as high as you can(1/5 bankroll rebuys)
>>
>>1154206
>>1154441
>variance is high
>use less bankroll
Sounds like asking to go broke, senpai.

On the other hand, what about SNGs? Rake doesn't count there, right?
>>
>>1153846
Well, there are a lot of young players who makes a lot of money playing online poker.

But on the other hand, the online games are getting really though. Many players who have been crushing live for a long time don't play online anymore because the games are so tough.

I know it's possible to still make a lot of money playing online poker, but it's extremley hard work. Comparable to becoming a pro athlete imo.

You pay rake at SnG's as well. For me, it's a lot easier making money at SnG compared to cash games.
>>
>>1154977
>You pay rake at SnG's as well.
I know, but I mean PLO SnGs. We were talking about how PLO is less profitable despite having a higher edge because the rake is too high. But this is for cash games and it doesn't apply to SNGs, right? The SNG rake is just a portion of the entrance fee.

>For me, it's a lot easier making money at SnG compared to cash games.
I prefer cash, but right now I have a really low bankroll so I'm building it up playing Double or Nothing. It's safe, but extremely frustrating. Full of idiots limping every hand and making the game last 10 times longer than it needs to.

> We were talking about how PLO is less profitable despite having a higher edge because the rake is too high.

Yeah, I guess this is true, I'm not really a PLO player, but I know many good players have changed over to PLO as the variance is supposedly less.

A tip from me if you want to make money playing poker is to stay away from pokerstars. The players are way worse at other rooms.
>>
>>1153921
wtf is a 200nl game
>>1154206
that's what makes PLO a better game to make money if you know what you're doing. People think they're good at Hold'em and want to go to PLO for their gambling junkie fix and they go broke in less than 1 round.

When I play at home games, there are always a few idiots that suggest we play PLO or round and round and I refuse because it WILL kill the game - 50+% of the players will bust in 15 mintues.

What sites you guys use?
>>
>>1153846
not for most people

learning poker online at low stakes, then *if* good enough to become consistent, playing live can lead to some side income
>>
>>1153846

If you are good enough. I am speaking face to face at a table poker, though. I would never put any money on the line.. on line. True table poker can be quite enjoyable and can teach you some things on top of the possibility of making a big take.

200nl is where the blinds are 1/2, meaning you bet is $2 and you buy in for $200, giving you the standard 100 bb stack

but yeah, most people don't know how big plo plays. games can start out at $50 buy ins and someone can end up leaving with a small thousand.
>>
>>1154990
I grinded double or nothing sngs for about year some years go. Its pure mathetics and in this case the maths go against regular thought. Like folding aces preflop is not uncommon. A lot of people on the low levels dont understand this and so the edge is quit good, but it gets exponentually worse, if you climb the ladder.
Playing live at casinos is best. Or live tourneys aswell.

>how big plo plays
i love it. having the nuts change on every street and having the ability to flop 20 outs is great for action.

wanna beat plo live? be betting on a monster draw to the nuts, or be betting the nuts. otherwise toss it. only bluff in position and on a table thats playing nitty. kinda hard to find a nitty live plo table though, most recs love the action and will call down for stacks with J high flush and small straights. easy game. swingy, but joocy
>>
>>1155305
Don't you have some youtube videos to comment on?
>>
>>1155735
nut draws don't come around often enough. you'd be playing maybe like .1% of the hands you get
>>
>>1155765

Well, he is not that wrong. There is no way for pokerstars to prove they are not cheating you . Provably fair casinos/gambling using Ethereum are the future.
>>
>>1153846

If you actually have some talent at it, sure it is.
>>
>>1155991
Ethereum. Theres not a chance in hell I would take on the volatility of a shitcoin to grind out poker margins. You would actually have to store some value in Eth for more than an hour or so which is stupid as fuck. I bet you can get 2 or 3 retards to do this though.
>>
>>1153846

AI student and retired semi-pro poker player here. There are already algorithms which have solved limit heads up poker. More complex variants will follow in the future. In the long run bots will completely destroy online poker. I wouldn't recommend wasting too much time on it.
