I think this one is a little misleading. First, they're clearly using the value of the derivatives instead of the premiums of derivatives, and secondly, only hedgefunds, daredevils and corporations using actual commodities are taking on significant long or short positions in derivatives. Anyone in an institution playing with actual money is going to hedge or cap their bets, so they're protected against crashes.
Sure the housing derivatives were a bad example, but that underlying issue (consumers and firms having the incentive to lie about the quality of their home loans) had nothing to do with the sheer size of the derivatives market--which is what this infographic is trying to talk about

it is misleading b/c most are cash settled and they use the pure unstructured notional value. also in the case of swaps you're tradingn the obligations back and forth between only a few parties.
People need to learn to play with derivatives. Most are way way better than pure equities.
