How come tobacco is a superior longterm investment vs an index?
Tobacco continuously has to deal with lawsuits, tax regulations, WHO types organisations taking a shit on them, bad press.
Yet they wipe the floor with the index, pic related.
They always had strong fundamentals, high profits, low debts and overall great management. That's what you should look for when investing in a company.

They just pass the costs onto the customer and budget accordingly, also they have battalions of lawyers on staff already so it's not like lawsuits cost them in legal fees.
It works because it's a really addictive product consumed by many and, possibly most importantly, it doesn't really impact your ability to earn money unlike other addictive drugs.
